    upgrade or new build

Currently using and old machine and looking for some advice on upgrades or possible new build. Have not built a machine for a long time so out of touch with the tech.current machine is a HP pavilion family: 103c_53316j product name: gu661aa-abu m9070.uk

    Currently using
    Q6600 quad core2.4 ghz
    3gb ramddr2 333
Win 7 ultimate 32bit but can upgrade to 64
    Nvidia geforce 8500 gt 512mb
    Motherboard - Asus ms1c7br70505966
Hard drive - 500gb and 2 external 500gb for backup and storage
    Display - Philips FTP 1920x1080 28inch

Have peripherals but would like new gaming mouse and keyboard if not too expensive

Also have some components that were given to me but I know they not great but may be of use to keep price down
Motherboard Asus p5g41t-mlxwith 2gb DDR ram
    Gpu - radeon hd5450 1gb

Would love to keep to a budget of about 600 but can and probably will be persuade to spend more if its worth it for noticeable stability and proformance. Not built my own for a long time but could give it a go if upgrade is bet option, otherwise new machine would be nice. Mainly used to play WOW at the moment so graphics not a huge load but want to be ready for the MOP increase in resources.

    Thanks in advance

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

    CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($189.99 @ Microcenter)
    Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Pro3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($102.55 @ Newegg)
    Memory: G.Skill Sniper Low Voltage Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($51.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: MSI Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card ($209.99 @ Newegg)
    Total: $554.52
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

Upgrading to this would greatly increase your computer's performance. If you live close to a Microcenter, I think you should be able to get a nice discount if you buy the CPU and motherboard there.

mobo seems fine and ram ofc, GPU good and i'm sure i can find it all on EU sites for delivery too as i'm sure delivery from the states is not included but was wondering why you choose that CPU over amd or the i7 or even i5-2500k, as i said dont really know much any more about the tech and all the new cpus confuse the hell out of me

If you upgrade as Anderzon suggests, and you have OEM Windows 7, then you will also need to buy a new Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

If your Windows 7 is not oem you will still need to upgrade to the x64 version, else you will not be able to use all of that 8GB of ram.

The 3570K is pretty much the Ivy Bridge version of 2500K. No reason to pick an i7 or an AMD CPU if you're going to use your computer for gaming purposes. I guess you could swap it for the 2500K if you want to, but if they're fairly even priced I'd go with the 3570K.

Although that PSU should theoretically suffice, I would still go for one with at least 500W, just to be sure. You don't want your failing PSU fry your other components.

Edit: For the 6870 as well as the 7850, the latter even consumes less power as far as I know but don't nail me on this one, would have to check it.

Even fully overclocked, that build will not consume more than 400W ever. A 450W PSU is fine as long as it is a high quality one.
