Thanks for the tips guys. Would you recommend playing multiple different champions (like the free ones for example) to get a feel for different types of game play, or try and find a favorite off the bat and focus on him/her?

Try the free ones. If you do strike gold with one, feel free to buy it, but at least play a game or two with a couple of the free ones to get an idea of what they can and can not do.

You absolutely NEED to play different champs, it's the best ways to know their weak/strong spots, so you can counter them efficiently.
In Soviet Russia banks rob you! Oh, wait a second...

Yeah free ones, the biggest mistake you can make at low levels is to fall into a role, if you do that your knowledge on champions is quite limited and you only know how to do one role. You can't effectively jungle until level 30, and it's not even useful until your team can react to ganks and your top lane can farm effectively. Until that happens top lanes won't get fed, a jungler's map control is useless and they fall behind what they would be in a double lane. Warwick and Nunu are the obvious choices if you want to jungle at low level, Shen and Cho'gath work as well.

Shen's clear time even at thirty is slow, so I don't know how much use he would be in a low level game. I do agree with cho'gath though. I think he would be able to jungle quite well without tunes and masteries because of his passive.
