List the types of classes a Shooter MMORPG would need and/or should have

What types of gun play styles would be suitable and desired in a shooter mmo?

To my mind things like a sniper or distance shooter, a heavy fire type of guy like rocket launcher, maybe a pyro?

The classes from Borderlands plus some. A medic would be a needed addition.

    heavy, tactical, assalt, stealth (sniper/spy)

i'm not sure if a FPSMMORPG would use the holy trinity? I'm not sure how you'd have a healer (short of shooting serynges[sp?]?) or tank . . . never played an FPSMMORPG (if there are any? - not sure borderlands counts? only ever played with max 1 other person)

Chaingun/Heavy arms, Assault Rifle/medium arms, Infiltration/bombs/melee/light arms, Medic/support, possibly sniper.

Basically warrior, mage, rogue, priest, optional hunter.

An engineer type class would be nice too.

Bounty Hunter, Bounty Hunter, Bounty Hunter done

But seriously, swtor uses ranged classes as healers and it 'works' to shoot/use tech to heal.

Unless you had stealth and a lot of survivability, an up close gun combat with shotguns and knives would get wrecked by all the long ranged. I don't think sniping would go over so hot in an MMO either, unless they could only use scopes on a cooldown. The whole concept really just seems silly tbh.

I've always been a fan of more open RPG systems rather than ones strictly divided into classes.

I'd much prefer a system that allowed to customize you own builds, rather an offer you per-determined setups. If you want to ply a sniping medic, you should. If you want to play a short-range Assault with Body armor and SMG, you should. Or maybe a Parachuting Engineer...anything goes.

Perk systems like that are what keep games like Modern Warfare so interesting without upsetting balance.

It all depends on the type of game you're making. What kind of shooter is it? How is the combat going to function? What kind of content will the game feature? What's the setting?

A FPS RPG should be something completely different than what we've seen so far. TF2 has had a strong correlation and everything else that has brought up so far is like everything else. What I would love to see is the MMOFPS Hellgate London should have been; instead of a good solo game, I'd love to see a great FPSMMO actually succeed. I want an FPSRPGMMO though, not just FPSMMO, that's why CoD exists. I want the person to have spells, dodge abilities, special "shots" (i.e. Enchanted bullets, etc.) You can enchant your ammo, gear, w/e. There should be several different classes but not based upon guns. Any class should be able to use any gun, you just have to specialize into that certain weapon and or class trait. Every class should have something different though, based upon what they do best (i.e. Scout, Enchanter, Berserker, Commander, Watcher, I have no idea about names but do something creative). A Scout relies on stealth, Enchanter relies on magic imbued bullets and weapons, Berserker the more damage you take the more damage you deal, Commander increase Morale and Leadership (I dunno, make it up), Watcher increased range and can see better in the dark. I know these are lame I haven't really thought about it much at all, class wise. But this is what I would love out of a FPSRPGMMO.

    My 2 cents

TL: DR Something different from what we've seen before would be appreciated.

planetside seemed to have a good system (never played it though)

kind of depends on if there will be vehicles or not though

I think a Shooter MMORPG would be better off using a design similar to The Secret World, with no classes at all. We could just have a few weapon classes and other kinds of skills, and experience to allocate there with enough use.

but yeah, assault, support gunner, medic, marksman and some sort of special forces

as said it really depends on what you would want from your game. Is it a milsim ? Whacky cartoon TF2 style ? Sci-Fi ?
