So guys, I'm having to replace my motherboard, and I've decided that it makes sense to upgrade some other components in my PC prior to me heading back to University. I use my computer constantly for gaming but I only play WoW, SC2, D3, LoL, CoD. On the other hand, due to my Uni course, I'll need to be using it for 3D modelling and I'd like to be able fraps on it but that's not needed. I'm not looking for anything seriously overkill because I don't really want to be spending a lot of money, maybe £400 tops. It just needs to reliably run everything I've said for the next few years. I have a 24" screen.
Anyways, here's what I've got.
CPU: AMD Athlon ll X4 Quad Core 2.6gHz
Motherboard: Broken, therefore MUST be replaced
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4870
Memory: 4GB RAM
HDD: 320GB
Case: Antec 300
PSU: OCZ ZS Series 750W '80 plus bronze'
Cooling: 4 random cheap fans
Done a little looking into things, and this is what I was looking at:
So quite frankly, my current system isn't all that although I have been able to run all the games I mentioned on ultra at 60fps/vsync. Don't have a clue what's best to get so I'll leave that and feedback down you guys.
Id look into upgrading to a new processor if your motherboard is shot anyways, CPU upgrade would benefit you the most IMO, sucks since your processor isnt broken but you could sell it locally and get a few extra bucks, I'd try and look into getting an SSD unless you REALLY need the space, an SSD really does make a difference.
So, that comes to £473.94 for what's being suggested. Any suggestions to get this down to around £400 ish, I mean it's not like I can't afford £500, it's just more of a matter that I have to pay for someone to put it all together as well because I wouldn't have a clue where to start.
From what I've read, Intel are a lot better than AMD when it comes to gaming so if I'm going to replace my AMD Athlon ll X4 Quad Core 2.6gHz, it makes sense to go with Intel rather than AMD seeing as I need to replace the motherboard regardless. I looked at the graphics card you linked but it says it's discontinued. Another thing, how hard is to assemble a PC, if it's not complicated then I could cut out the cost of paying someone to do it for me.
Well at this point, I wouldnt (and didnt) go with AMD, I have an i5-3570k myself and cant say enough good things about it. However I believe the HD 7770 is sub par compared to the 6870 or 6850 http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/G...7770_OC/1.html
I agree, I just used a website to compare the HD 6850 to a HD 7770 and the 6850 beat it on performance. Going to leave it a day or 2 before I do anything, hopefully get some more responses, more opinions and then I can make a better decision based on what various people suggest, but from reading various threads, it looks like the i5-3570k/Azrock Z77 Extreme 4 combo is a popular option. I managed to find some Corsair RAM for the same price as the TeamGroup, would you suggest the Corsair?
Its not terribly hard to build a PC, it just takes patience and tiny hands are a plus. Basically if it doesnt fit in a slot, its not supposed to go there (giggity) But it does involve some research, but at the end of it all if you are still wary of building it, take your pieces to someone who can (and is preferably insured!)

I have a couple sticks of Corsair Vengeance ram myself, no problems in the other 3 machines I put together for friends either, good brand thats for sure.
