    What is your graphics card?

  2. #22
That heatsink is incompatible with LGA 1155 motherboards.

See the Details tab on its Newegg page:

    Compatibility
    AMD Athlon 64 FX (Socket 939, 940, AM2)
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 (Socket 939, AM2)
    AMD Athlon 64 (Socket 754, 939, AM2)
    AMD Sempron (Socket 754, 939, AM2)

I cannot judge what power supply you need if you do not tell me which graphics card you are going to be using.

You only linked a single RAM unit, you will get much greater performance if you use two.

I still have the following questions:

What is your total budget for the upgrades?
Which components do you not need to buy? Tell me the brand, model name and number of each of them.
Do you have a copy of Windows that you can use (the copy used in your old PC most likely won't work)?
Do you feel capable of putting the whole thing together when you get the parts? They will not arrive pre-assembled.

Anyway, I'm now off to bed, I'm sure somebody else can continue to help; I won't be around for a while.

Okay, I'll wait till you come back tomorrow or whenever you're available. I only linked one ram unit because I am getting two of the same unit. I replied late but I told you I will be using the GTX 560 SE. I know for a fact that power supply will suffice IF wattage is your concern. I did not understand the compatibility info' you just posted because I am a noob. My total budget, I would say, is $300 - $350 being I have the video card and CPU covered. I do not need or want to buy a new hard-drive. Please don't laugh too hard: 500GB 16MB/7200 rpm sata. The ridiculous part is I can't find the brand anywhere on the package. not even on the manual. I have the windows issue covered completely, it will be no problem. I know I'm capable of putting together but if I so happen to not know a certain something, I will have plenty of help to fall back on. I don't think there are any other parts I need. I'm so grateful for your help. I don't know how to express my thanks

I STRONGLY discourage buying an apevia power supply don't be fooled by the high wattage and cheap price i had a 650 watt apevia that basically turned off when i tried putting sli cards in it, cheap power supply's cant handle anywhere near the wattage they are "rated" for. you really should buy a lower wattage like 500 watt corsair power supply that will run fine even when pushed to its limit. you dont need more than 500 for that build.

I haven't read through this thread, but have you purchased the 560 se yet? There are better cards at that price point such as the 6850/7770.
    i7-4770k - GTX 780 Ti - 16GB DDR3 Ripjaws - (2) HyperX 120s / Vertex 3 120

Nicer, better quality case, better motherboard, better RAM, much better power supply. As you can't overclock the CPU, you can forget about the cooler, the CPU comes with a perfectly adequade one. I went with a slightly better spec motherboard.

You really should have asked about the graphics card before coming here, you can get much better value for your money than the 560 SE.

Damn. Everythings so much more expensive on the Canadian site. The total comes to 420 even without the cooler.

If you don't mind buying at different retailers, you can get it rather cheaper

Still think I should be buying the cooler? And just for future reference or in case of me returning my video card, what would you recommend for that setup that you think is of much better value than 560?

I only left it in there to compare the price.

if you want to get the aftermarket cooler, get it. It will run quieter and cooler than the stock cooler. However, it is not needed, so if you want to save 25 bucks then that is the first place I would look to reduce the over-all cost. Also, if you want to spend more money, 25 dollars more would get you a cooler that is even quieter and runs even cooler.

The case is also a personal thing. It will be sitting next to you for the next few years. Make sure you like it before buying it.

If you can also find all/most at NCIX, they DO do a price match... always something to look for.

    Saving 5$ ftw..

    Also, Crucial Ballistix sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) - for 39.99$

AMD HD 6850, 6870 or 7770 are currently the joint rulers of the under-150 dollar bracket. Although I would tend to the 7770 because it is newer tech, produces less heat and uses less power.

And just to make sure, don't forget to mount the stock heatsink, the computer will not boot if you have no heatsink installed

No offense but you should really do some homework on parts, and especially on the building side of things before you order anything so in 3 weeks we dont just have a "help me build my computer!!!" thread.

Reading this thread was a train wreck.
