Very few people can pull off this look, so you might be looking at a shaved head and face for a while if you can't pull it off.

How the heck is a bald not professional? A hell of a lot cleaner than any of the mops people run around on their heads these days.
I'm slightly gingerish as well, though only on my beard, and I love my bald+santaclausbeard, wouldn't change it for anything.
One thing to note though is that if you're a bit on the heavier side, and not on the muscular, you might get these fatsausages on your neck which looks pretty disgusting in my opinion.
