    Lightbulb There, their, they're

Is anyone else completely baffled as to the fact that what seems like the vast majority of English speaking people on this forum, and many others across the internet, cannot correctly use these three words? It's real simple people...

There - a place, a direction - Did you see that over there?
Their - indicates possesion of something by a group - They didn't want to get their clothes dirty.
They're - a contraction of two words, they and are - They're going to win!

I mean, come on people!!! This is basic stuff we were all taught in grammar school! It pains me to see an intelligently written and well thought out post that is marred by the misuse of these words.

I hope this little lesson was helpful.

Most of the people posting here are incompetent monkeys.

That and English might not be their first language.

    Some more I'm seeing lately:

People wanting to "take a peak"...unless this has become some sort of meme, I'm seeing it so often now.

I'm also playing a game in which a dragon keeps talking about wanting a "horde" of money. le sigh.

This is why I find people who can actually spell and use proper grammar to be more intelligent. And not just because I try to use correct spelling and grammar. >_>

rofl i have a first class degree from cardiff uni in english language and i very rarely ever use proper grammar + punctuation on forums lol

    theres no point

if you can perfectly understand what some1 says then what the hell is the problem other than to wave the grammar nazi flag. lol.

the way i see it: if you're losing an argument u have 2 options, 1) call them racist 2) comment on their grammar.

    eod.

Well if we're going to start being technical, "real simple" isn't really right either.

English is my secondary language and I knew this in the seventh grade.. I speak 4 languages fluently! I find it baffling too, and it annoys the hell out of me.

What does it matter? As long as the message being conveyed was understood, then mission accomplished.

    Degrees don't make you intelligent.

Spelling properly conveys a better image of your character. For example, you said "some1". Now, i automatically think "moron". You saved time by typing two less letters. This would have made a difference on a phone from the 90's. But on a keyboard, you have no excuse.

Oh and the topic starter was talking about saying correct words. You don't convey the meaning properly if you type the wrong word, do you?

Grammar is quite simple, but a lot of people choose to leave it because there's no reason to be polite on a forum such as this. Imagine everyone writing in proper grammar, what kind of forum would this become!? :O

I guess I can see the validity of your point of view. However, it lessens someone's perception of you. Of course, since we're all nameless "faces" on these forums anyway, what one random person's impression of you shouldn't matter, I suppose. :P

I only use shorthand when texting. I like having a full keyboard in front of me, and when I have to use only my thumbs, THEN I go bare minimum.

You must understand that English ins't everyone's main language, meaning that not everyone(almost everyone even me and you) can make mistakes sometimes or can't understand yet the difference from those 3 words. Yeah sometimes people do mistakes but I see no point in being angry at it like you, probably are, because like I said not everyone is good at English, and when discussing with someone and saying their grammar is bad is stupid and means you just ran out of arguments.

Btw, it's normal that you see a lot of people doing these mistakes specially if they are playing a game or typing fast, I mean it's necessary to deliver an information as fast as possible and understandable, and everyone understands what "btw", "wth", "wtf", etc, and when they aren't using the correct "their", "there" and "there're".

    To, Too, and Two.
    They're, Their, and There.

Using them incorrectly is a pet peeve of mine. I know it's the internet and all which is why I don't go out of my way to say anything about it even if it's a friend, but it does still bother me inside. :/

Aye, most but not all. I'd hate to see everyone doing it. It would make me feel like something is missing on the interwebs.

English is a pretty messed-up language to begin with. So many different vowel sounds, words that sound the same but are spelled differently, words that are SPELLED the same but are pronounced differently. It's some weird shit.

I realized long ago that "own," "now," and "won" all have the exact same letters, but because of the way they're arranged, the "o" has an entirely different sound to it. English. Go figure.
