Question Gaming at 2560x1440 vs 5760x1080

I have been looking over new monitors for some time now since I have completed my new system and I can decide what to buy. I was thinking I could go with the 5760x1080 or run a single 2560x1440. I was also wondering you can run 3 2560x1440 monitors off 2 GTX 680's in SLI. If so ive been looking at the Catleap Q270 27inch(2560x1440) and the Asus VE258Q 25" (3@1920x1080) Looking for suggestions and overall advice on what to do. I have the space and the system to do any setup I just ant to hear what you guys think.

If you are planning to run 7680x1440 you will need more than the standard 2GB of vRAM on GTX 680 even the 4GB version will be limited by the membus, to get any kind of decent performance with that resolution you are looking for at least dual 7970, perhaps even triple depending on what games you are planning to play and at what settings you want to use.
    Intel i5-3570K @ 4.7GHz | MSI Z77 Mpower | Noctua NH-D14 | Corsair Vengeance LP White 1.35V 8GB 1600MHz
    Gigabyte GTX 670 OC Windforce 3X @ 1372/7604MHz | Corsair Force GT 120GB | Silverstone Fortress FT02 | Corsair VX450

I love 5760x1080, putting recount on another screen and not having to see it is amazing.

Honestly I don't know how well Nvidias membus can handle that resolution but you will need to get 4GB vRAM version at least, Tri-SLI if you want to play on high/ultra settings in the most demanding games.

It's not about the amount of cards but the vRAM you can get 4 cards but if they got 2 gb that's all they can use, they share the vRam so you either need something like 7970 Toxic or atleast 4gig vRAM 680's

It is about the number of cards as well, the Sapphire Toxic only runs BF3 at around 30FPS at the resolution in question.

This is in campaign mode, so multiplayer will probably have less FPS, adding another card won't scale to 100% either so if you want steady 60FPS+ you are probably looking at 3 cards.

Ok so right now I have 2 2GB 680's. Is it possible to add a 4gb one or do they all have to be 4gb?

They all need to be 4GB or they will all run as 2GB.

Well that sucks, Looks like ill be sticking to one monitor for now or the 3 1080p ones. Still looking for opinions and types of monitors to buy. The ones I listed were examples of what I could dig up.

Personally I would go with one of the Catleaps or perhaps two for the extra workspace.

What do you mean by buggy? Do you mean most games don't support it natively or what? (sorry I don't know much about this stuff)

A lot of games do support a tri-monitor resolutions out of the box and for the major ones that don't, there's 3rd party programs that'll help with it but tri-monitor setups are fairly new and playing on those setups is like a playing a game in a beta stage when compared to single monitor. For example: I get stuttering in Battlefield 3 with Eyefinity where it looks like the game is running at 20-25 FPS when Fraps shows 60 and the problem goes away when I play on a single monitor.

5760x1080 is fantastic, highly recommended. As long as you have the system to support it you'll probably never want to go back after experiencing widescreen gaming like this.

    My setup:

1440p - you can always get more in the future, 1080p is 2nd class compared to it.

Also consider checking out 120hz.net Its a site run by a few folks from overclock.net - these monitors they sell have a replaced PCB similar to the 2b models that will run 100hz-130hz ish depending on which one you get, obviously they cost more. My next monitor will most likely be one of these.

    *currently running a 60hz Catleap q270 1440p 27"*

Honestly, you'll never go back to single screen gaming once you go multi mon.

What size you like is all preference, personally I think 3x 27" at 1440 is just a little too big if it's a desk, unless you sit a bit back from it.

    I play at 5760*1080 with SLI 4GB GTX 680s and it's fantastic:

I think for now with my current setup ill be using a 27inch crossover however I am stuck between 2 different models. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-CROSSOVER...t_11949wt_1397 and http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-CROSSOVER...t_11961wt_1397

I Know that the cheaper one is the 27Q LED and the other is a 27Q-T. Been looking over both pages and the only thing I noticed is that the cheaper of the two had 420cd/m2 for brightness and the more expensive had 380cd/m2.

Anyone seeing something that im missing here? Something just doesn't add up...

Once you go 2560x1440 (or higher resolution in general) you won't go back. Gaming with a higher pixel-count does a huge difference and in WoW it just offers you a ton of more screen real-estate.

I personally find multi-monitor gaming a bit gimmicky. It's nice for competetive, fast, shooters where the peripheral vision can grant you an advantage, but for other games it's a bit hit and miss really. Can't see it being useful for WoW at all (having one screen to offload addons to can be of help though) and in RTS and games alike it will flat out not work or just be bad/hinder you.

My vote goes for a single 2560x1440 monitor with one or two extra 1080p monitors on the side for added workspace.
