    FPS or RPG style ?

I'm thinking about dipping in to GW2 (long time WoW) player, but I'm getting confusing answers via Google.

I'm trying to work out if it is FPS style (like Skyrim) or RPG style (like WoW, SWTOR etc)?

Fundamentally - I can't play FPS style games, and would prefer to not fork out the dosh without knowing.

Also - can I assign all my movement to the mouse, or am I forced (like skyrim) into using QWES etc ?

    Thanks.

It is ARPG: basically Skyrim locked in in 3rd person.

    Bugger - I can't play Skyrim, so I guess that means I can't play GW2

Although - I can play D3 (and they are both listed on google searches as ARPG).

Confused still, but figure I'll avoid the pain and stick to WoW

The movement is pretty much the same as WoW and other gMMORPG ames with a few exceptions:

-dodging: by double tapping a direction you will dodge in that direction
-you can attack people without targeting, the skill will fire in the direction your character's looking.
-you can use skills while out of range and they will miss
-there's collision detection, so you can jump in a projectile's line of fire to save an ally.

But if you played wow, the movement shouldn't feel very different.

EDIT: Also best to ignore tackhisis when it comes to GW2, he's a known troll on this forum.

I've read the online manual, and checked via google - and everywhere I see shows WASD for movement.

I have a disability (I'm f'ed in the head basically) and I can't use my left hand for any movement.

I have a mouse that can move everywhere, strafe and up/down on WoW - will I be able to move around at all.

I spent close to an hour on Skyrim, and couldn't get out of the welcome yard. SO I gave up on that.

Just want to know I have half a chance of being able to play GW2 before forking out the dosh.

I'm 33 yrs old, I have never played a single FPS game in my life

    you'll love GW2

it's like WoW, except more fluid and faster paced

difference is this in a nutshell

in WoW you can engage a mob, go afk and come back mob dead just from auto-attack

GW2 you can engage a mob, go afk and chances are you might be dead when you get back or really low in health

give GW2 a try, at $60, it might be the best purchase you have made in the last 5 years

    truthfully

AS long as the mouse isn't moving the camera like Skyrim, but rather moving your character - I can manage.

Not really, no. The controls are the same, the camera has a bit of a different feel, but as far as control scheme it is the same.

The online manual says - I can't play it (WASD), I'm coming here just to find out if it is something I can even attempt to play (this isn't about taste, this is just about being able to move my character at all).

    Currently (in WoW) :

I use the mouse to move forward/back, toggle move on/off, move up(or jump), move down (land), strafe left and strafe right AND target and use.

Now - I can move the target/use to the keyboard (like D3) however I can't use the keyboard to do ANY movement or any actions associated with movement.

You can move with the mouse by double clicking just like WoW and the other major MMOs. You lock targets just like WoW and every other major MMO.

Your problem is going to be that being a "clicker" and not a "keyboarder" is not helpful for GW2 as movement is key in every fight. You have to be able to dodge attacks and, since you can't really use your left hand, doing all that with just the right will be very, very difficult.

    I'm confused

.......what do you mean you can't play it WASD? it's not click to move

    you can use your keyboard..

    it's an RPG

    an MMORPG

    not an fps

and i've played skyrim, Skyrim is a joke

it's an FPS masquerading as an RPG

yet another reason i've never played those games as devoted an rpg-a-holic as i am i absolutely HATE the fps games pretending to be rpg's

skyrim, oblivion, borderlands (which looked awesome), etc

fps sucks (in my never humble opinion and also because i get motion sick from fps games, lol)

How do you use your mouse to move in wow? do you use click-to-move (click the area to which you want your character to move), I am unsure but I think that's not in GW2, although it was in the first one. The wiki says it isn't supported.

If you have a special setup with a mouse that has extra buttons which you use for movement, you should be able to keybind the buttons to that mouse.

That said, in GW2, movement and twitch gameplay is very important so I am unsure whether that will work out for you. It might be best to contact arenanet support. They are usually very friendly and dedicated to their customers.

I hope it will work out for you

oh you have a disability and cannot use your left hand for any movement

if that's the case the answer is NO, you cannot play GW2

    it doesn't have click-to-move

it has click-to-interact but it won't let you play just by using your right hand/mouse

sorry my friend, but this is a pass for you

I repeat: IT DOES NOT have click-to-move

I can't use WASD to move, as in I am not capable of playing a game which requires me to use the keyboard to move.

I don't use click to move on WoW, I have mouse buttons assigned to move forward/back/strafe etc.

    you can use your keyboard..
    Not for movement.

    Correct

    Thanks

    Nice concise answer - appreciated.

I suspected that from the manual, but many of you guys have been on beta, so I figure you might know if there was any way around that.

The game just looks so awesome, but that's life

    Re: Click to move
I don't use click to move in WoW either, I actually have a button for forward, a button for back a button for strafe left, right etc. Matter of fact I have 6 movement buttons on my mouse.

By click to move I assume you mean click on the field of play and you move there ? No, I never use that in WoW (in D3 that happens though)?

Sounds like he rebinds his movement keys to mouse buttons.

If that is the case OP, GW2 has the ability to keybind how you like, just like WoW. So pretty much everything movement-wise you do in WoW, you can do in GW2. Just rebind WASD to whatever mouse buttons you want. It also has the standard press both mouse buttons to move feature.

    Hope that answered your query.

It's played in the third person perspective like WoW is. It's not first person like Skyrim.

If you can play wow, you can play GW2. It's a bit more movement heavy though with active dodging being a necessity. That might be an issue with your disability, since unlike wow you cant stand still and shoot, you need to be moving and actively dodging attacks and such. That might be difficult to do with only one hand.

    no, he cannot..

gw2 and wow has a fundamental difference

    click-to-move

you can do that in wow, you cannot in gw2

...you can double-click to interact in gw2, but you cannot simply click on the map in order to move your character there

I think you can move your character by holding down both mouse buttons..not quite sure tho.
Maybe someone else can confirm this? If not, i'll come back here and confirm when GW2 launches, which is in 18 hours

EDIT: If not, i'm pretty sure you can rebind WASD to your mouse buttons instead to move. I think you can also bind the dodge/roll "double-tap" to dodge/roll button so you can roll/dodge into whatever direction you're going in at the time you click the dodge/roll button. That last part was kinda confusing. Sorry.

You can use the mouse the same way for movement in GW2 as in WoW. Two buttons for run etc. Of course, one probably gets better performance from using WASD + mouse for camera control, but it is not mandatory. If you can manage playing WoW you will also manage to play GW2.

However (as people have already pointed out), the combat in GW2 is very action-based. You have to move quickly and be able to dodge etc. I do not know if it is possible to dodge with the mouse (maybe someone can clarify this?). I take you can use your let hand for active abilities but not for movement (some sort of functional disassociation problem)?
