Don't be fooled by simple graphics, FTL is one of best strategy games I've played, and it has huge replay value due to ship unlocking and random generated levels. Unforgiving difficulty is just icing on the cake.

I can't say I've been impressed with the game as-is so far.
It needs steam achievements for starts,
better "progression" even if you fail pretty early - nothing is saved etc.
Perhaps an update will bring some improvements.

Why Steam achievements? It has its own within the game that cover the same purpose. Progression is mostly getting the better ships. One feature that keeps you playing a rogue-like is permadeath, and I'd frankly not play it if it saved my OP beam weapons if I chose not to upgrade my shields or something. That just makes the game too easy to cheese. A rogue-like is not meant to be beatable every time, and that's why I think they are so good.

I've beaten it a couple of times on the lowest difficulty but only when I've gotten lucky with getting parts.

just did 1 run, 2nd encounter in 2nd galaxy, ive got 4 crew members, starting droid and ion cannon, and i get borded by 4 men with 2 lazers shooting at me
unfair!

yeah i was for a bit, but basically they destoryed my shields and my oxegen room so i didn't last very long it was just a bad case of rng lol
