    From glasses to lenses

I recently started to use contact lenses instead of glasses as I feel its easier and more comfortable to use. However it takes ages for me to put them on in the morning, and Im usually 10-15 min late to class because of it. Any contact lense users here who can give me tips how to put them on easier and how long it took for you to get used to them compared to using glasses.

I've used contacts before but didn't like the hassle of having to make sure they stayed moist but really it just takes time to get used to putting them in. After a while it'll be second nature to you putting them in and you'll be able to put them in in a minute or 2. It took me a month or 2 to get used to them. My advice for the getting to class late because of putting them in would probably be this: Wake up earlier :P

What kind of lenses do you use? (daily, monthly etc)
Didn't you get any instructions from the optrician when you got the lenses?

I can tell you it's a lot about willpower in the beginning. To not blink too early.

I got the monthly ones. I used to use lenses back in 9th grade but stopped as it took too much time in the morning for me to put them on so I stopped. I got the basics tought to me by the optrician but its still very hard for me to apply them. I can take them off easy though.

The daily lenses are easier to handle since they're softer but as I said and the poster above me said. It just takes time to get used to. Your body doesn't really like to get stuff stucked in it's eyes.

If you have problems with the lenses falling out after you put them in then you should try to blink more carefully just after you put them in. Also if you can keep from blinking try to move the lens around on your eye with your finger a bit before you blink.

They don't fall out while inside, but when I'm reading books or sit at the computer i feel my eyes get very dry and I need to blink more than usual and often close my eyes for some moments. Is it okay to put eye drops in the eyes to keep them moist while wearing lenses?

    I have monthly ( soft ) lenses.

Use two fingers to open your eye ( For example your thumb to lower the lower eyelid, and the index finger to lift the upper eyelid).
Use the other hand to put in your contact.

After a while you can do it with one hand. ( I use my middle finger to lower my lower eyelid, and my index finger to put in my contact )

Ive been using lenses on a daily basis for almost three years now. I dont even need a mirror anymore and I can put them on one-handed within seconds.

It takes some time and practice, though. The biggest issue you have is that your eyes are not used to it, yet. They think theres something in your eye that doesnt belong there and, through reflexes, your eyes close or you start blinking. This reflex will fade away after some time. It usually takes up to a month... at least in my case.

It helps if you repeat the process of putting them on and off every day. Once your eye do not reflex anymore because of the contact lenses, try putting them on single handed by putting the lense on the tip of your middle finger, holding your eyelid down with your index finger and forcing your upper eyelid to stay open simply by using the muscle in your eyelid.

Until then, just hold your eyes open with index and thumb and put the lense into your eye from the tip of your other hands finger. Make sure that you DO NOT put the lense under normal water b4. This drys the lense out and it might become sticky and then it falls off after getting attached to your inner eye lid. Always moist them with your lense liquid and then put them on. If your eyes burn from the liquid, you are either puting too much on them or you should change the liquid or lense (some lenses are too thick, thus irritating the eye).

I've been using them for years and I still get this. You just need to blink more or use eye drops. Just use like one or two drops, if you use more the contact can shift and may fall out or go behind your eye

yes but make sure they are contact friendly.

if they are monthly contacts...normally you dont take them out each night.

if you have 'weekly' in which you take out each night you get used to it. i can put in and take them out without a mirror. what i find easier is to place the contact on the white of my eye, blink, and the contact is now positioned correctly.

you might be having a problem seeing your own figure come at you! lol

    edit:
contact user - pushing well past a decade.

Well if you only have problems with putting them into the eye, it's only a matter of time before you get used to it.

Your eyes being dry is perfectly normal, especially after a whole day. Using eyedrops is actually something optricians recommend if you feel it's annoying.

I don't have any tips, but I don't understand how people use contact lenses. I have a bit of a phobia of things coming near my eyes. I can't even use eye drops without freaking out. The way people can just drop lenses into their eyes and take them out later completely baffles me.

In the beginning its awful. And by awful I mean horribly awful. Your eyes reflex all the time and they just do not want to stay open. I couldnt handle putting it on my own so I had my optician to do it for me. After a few days its still horrible, but you can do it by yourself. After two weeks or so you dont even feel it anymore. The eyes just do not give a shit anymore.

Some people think the eye will explode the moment you touch it. It will not. It doesnt even hurt when you touch your eyes slightly. Also, you dont RAMM the lenses into your eyes like crazy... you just softly put them on top of it. Since they are wet, you dont even feel them. You only have to live through the part where your eyes want to close because of contact with something that usually does not belong there.

That is generally what I was advised to do by the optician but using eye drops too often is bad too, it can cause your eyes to become even dryer eventually - they get sort of addicted to the eye drops. I use contacts when I go out, when I want to wear sunglasses, when I exercise, but if I am just studying for example and/or got to spend a lot of time in front of a pc screen or with a book, I always take them out. No need to torture your poor eyes any more.

Tips that helped my father doing it:

    1. Dont push the lens onto your eye, rather bring it very close and it will lash on by itself.
    2. Try to be quick at least untill the final millimetres or so, the longer you take the harder it becomes not to blink.

    *edit*
Oh and dont wear them too long, basic monthly lenses are meant for 10 hours a day max, they will start to irritate if you wear them too long. You can upgrade to more expensive ones if you want to wear them like 16 hours a day.

I'm in the same boat. I tried them once when I was around 15, because I thought my glasses were too nerdy or something. These days, glasses are fashionable anyway, there's nothing in it for me to even try contacts again.

I completely believe this, but the idea of just putting something in my eye freaks me out. I still remember being a kid, maybe 10 years old, going for a routine eye exam. Putting my face in this metal contraption and having puffs of air blown in my eye still haunts me to this day lol

I tried lenses once last year or so, and just couldn't get used to it. It was uncomfortable, somewhat painful and just weird. So I decided i would just stick to glasses, even if glasses can be very annoying as well.
Someday I will get eye surgery for sure, I have only had glasses for 9 years, but I am already tired of them.

Yeah, glasses have become so light-weight and very sleek that they are almost not noticeable on the face. Combine that with my own phobias, it seems ridiculous to change now.
