Can religion and science coexist?

In my seminar today we discussed whether or not religion and science can coexist, the class was pretty divided. I personally don't believe one can exist while the other does. But many do for whatever reason. Let's discuss this!

Please don't turn this into a religion bashing thread, no religion is better or worse than another, this discussion is purely to discuss whether or not scientific discovery can exist while believing in a supreme being (OF ANY RELIGION).
