    Computer fps issues

    Hello Mmo-champs,
I recently purchased the last "Narwhal" build from the computer set up of the month. Expected good performance, but it seems pretty slow. A friend of mine with an older computer (~ 1 yr I think) and less powerful components is outperforming it.

XFX Radeon HD 7850 2gb Gfx
    256gb Samsung SSD
    8 gb DDR3 ripjaws ram
    Intel i5-3850k
    Asus p8-z-77k-v lk Motherboard
    Windows 64bit

AS far as I can tell all drivers are up to date, but even in wow I'm running around 30-40 fps while just flying around. D3 is highly unstable falling sometimes down to 30 fps. Borderlands 2 drops to around 30 while moving around.

    12.8 catalyst

For what I spent, I expected to at least be able to run those games at max gfx (or just about) but even with adjustments its trailing. First time building a computer from scratch, so I have no idea of anything special I need to do.

    Help appreciated, Oma.

    1. What resolution are you playing at?
    2. What PSU did you get?
    3. Download http://openhardwaremonitor.org/ , run it and let it hang out in the background. Play one of your games for 8 minutes or so, tab out and take a screenshot of the program's window and post it here.
    i7-4770k - GTX 780 Ti - 16GB DDR3 Ripjaws - (2) HyperX 120s / Vertex 3 120
    ASRock Extreme3 - Sennheiser Momentums - Xonar DG - EVGA Supernova 650G - Corsair H80i

    Thank for the reply:

    1. 1980X1020
    2. CorsairTX 650w PSU
    3. http://imgur.com/iYPz5 Image of the running Open Hardware.

That was after about 5 minutes of WoW and 5 minutes of offline D2.
**Both max gfx. Expecting this 1100$ to be able to handle these games maxed.

Well that shows your issue. Now, now matter what, do NOT run any 3D application again under any circumstance, your GPU is overheating. Couple more questions now:

    1. Is your room excessively hot?
    2. Did you overclock the card? Did you use the overdrive option in the driver control panel?
    3. How many case fans do you have?
    i7-4770k - GTX 780 Ti - 16GB DDR3 Ripjaws - (2) HyperX 120s / Vertex 3 120

Oh huh alright thanks, we narrowed it down.

    1. No
    2. No
    3. 2 case fans, was looking to buy more. The CPU has 2 120mm fans on it (Thermaltake Frio overclocking cpu cooler) the fans are adjustable, turned them up. Someone else installed the cpu cooler, using the thermalcompound. 2 200mm case fans are coming in the mail in a few days.

    4. Just noticed the PSU fan isn't turning. That sounds like a bad problem.

If you have some case fans going, then all signs point to a defective card. I guess it's time for you to RMA it unfortunately. What's happening is that when your card hits above 100c, it throttles itself down to prevent damage, in turn negatively affecting your FPS.

Good news though, your PSU is fine. Newer TX series units support a fanless mode. It will only turn on if absolutely necessary when it hits both a certain temperature and a certain load. With your rig requiring maybe 200w at most under load, you should expect it to almost never turn on.

Alright. I'll RMA the card and get a newer one, since I see no other issues that could be happening.

On a side note, the rest of my setup is doing fine yes? No worries about damaged hardware?

And is the cpu core temp #5 supposed to be hitting 90-100?

Is there any other reason a GPU would sky rocket from ~45 to 100 as SOON as you start a game?

I noticed your samsung SSD was also reaching 72c, that should not happen as it does not generate heat. Is it placed very close to your GFX card? Ypur CPU was also indicating 96c at full load. I am not sure it is just your video card based on this. Do you have a spare video card anywhere that you can test to see if these temperatures are reached again?

Uhm.. 10000RPM? Those fans can't reach that speed.. Some temps are -x° but that isnt correct. Use another tool to track your temperatures like GPU-z and coretemp for the cpu. That tool seems to be bugged..

Btw noticing your fsb is at 103MHz.. This overclocks your RAM as well and can cause issues on stability. Id rather set everything manually in the bios instead of using Asus turbo profile.

Your cpu is currently overclocked to 4.3GHz, an Ivy bridge gets hot. If your temperatures are high in coretemp, switch to Asus normal profile..

It's 72c from the drive's max temp threshold, not actually 72c. So it's fine.

    @OP:

You probably think that in order to run WoW at max settings you need to OC your Ivy Bridge to 4+ GHz just because everyone is doing so?

Well no, I am running WoW at max settings (each and every setting at the maximum available setting), 1920X1080 resolution, with my five-year old CPU UNDERCLOCKED and my high-end GPU also underclocked.

WoW is a very old game which puts extremely low stress on both CPU and GPU, except in cases where you 'd run ULTRA and a 40-man raid. Its graphics are also 2-3 years behind modern games.

So, put your CPU back to stock settings and enjoy WoW at ULTRA with no freezes, stops or other performance degradation, except ofc if you really MUST run your Ivy @4.4 GHz for bragging reasons only.

    EDIT:

    Here's my temps:
