    Need f2p mmo!

    Hi!

I've been lurking these forums for quite some years but never registered to post anything... (forums ain't my thing) so this is my very first post here! Be kind with me D':

My best friend and I have already grow tired of paying to play WoW, it does not make much sense for us right now. Yes, pandas, new content... it's the same shit over again. It would be fine if it wasn't so expensive. So we're looking for a f2p mmo to pass the time. We play LoL sometimes but we don't really feel like playing all day... and we get bored easily. We want some mmo to invert some time into, not like playing 24/7 but you know. We know we won't find anything really like WoW, and we don't want that. We don't mind the graphics (but we stay away from Ragnarok and Mapple Story) and we REALLY like hunter/ranger/archer class and PETS. We were both hunters since vanilla till past week :P so we'd love an mmo with those kind of classes.

As of now I've seen the following mmos but haven't tried them yet, maybe any of you could give some info about gameplay and such on these ones?

-DragonSoul, seems ok but nothing interesting.
-Grand Fantasia, tried it some time ago and it was fun! I got tired because I didn't understand much, no one helped and I was playing alone xD
-War of the immortals, seems good but there's something about it that doesn't really convince me...
-Vindictus, a friend plays this one and she really likes it, but I'm not sure about it.

Appart from that, I'm planing on buying GW2 soon, but some friend told me it wasn't really THAT good. I tried it in beta, and liked it, but I don't know, is it worth it? my friend says it lacks on endgame content and that weapon skills are the worst :/

Well, last of all, I'd love if anyone would recommend a different free mmo from the ones I've said. Just don't say LOTRO! we got tired too fast of playing that one :/

Thanks everyone D: and sorry about my mistakes in english, it's not my native language.

Try LotRO, it's actually pretty good. Graphics can seem kinda outdated a bit, but hey it's F2P.

It has a 2 pet classes - Loremaster gets an animal and Captain gets a follower. It has a ranger-type class (hunter) which gets fast travel, but no pet.
The night is dark and full of terrors...

Try DDO or Age of Conan

About GW2, it's a matter of taste. Some will like it, some will not like it. It feels very different then WoW ( as you said you played for quite some time ) and A LOT of things were "fixed" or made better for the launch ( not that GW2 felt bad in BETA, but it's a different story when the game goes live ) It's very fun and addicting, as any good MMO, and it is grind/PvP (WvsWvsW and sPvP) oriented endgame ( grinding for cool looking armors/weapons, trying to decide if you want to spend a month ( or more? ) getting an legendary item and such.

As of F2P games, as Namelessone said, try LOTRO or wait for SW:TOR to go F2P in november. So you have a lot of options for going on.

EDIT: Note - Dungeons are fun and you should read about them if you're into PvE. They have a story (easy) mode and also explorable mode ( harder mode with 3-5 entirely different paths and bosses in every dungeon ) also be aware of META events around the globe, many ppl are not aware that you can fight bigass dragons with 50 more ppl in those events.

    Have fun choosing

What aren't you sure about regarding Vindictus? Season 2 is around the corner and a new character is going to come out really soon (most are guessing by the end of October).

Well I played LOTRO for a while now and I just can't keep playing. It bores me. I don't know, it's just probably me.
I will try SW:TOR, it seems pretty interesting.

About Vindictus... well, I'm not used to the combat style, and I don't like the fact that you don't create your own character but rather pick a hero and customize it, kind of reminds me of Diablo... I didn't like that aspect of the game D: but overall the game looks pretty good. Guess I'll give it a try after all.

    Thx for the replies!

Gw2 is best on market atm and you only have to buy it once.

It's not F2P yet and it'll be a massive P2W later, basically only story 1-50 is free.

Anyway, if you don't already see where I'm going with this, allow me to spell it out: the only meaningful MMORPG "endgame" -- i.e., something novel to do after the progression process is over -- is that of the sandbox.

The best part of the game is f2p, so where's the problem with that?

Problem is SWTOR is will earn little to no money if they do it like this.

I recommend DDO, although the free part is a bit limited. The ranged pet class (artificer) you need to buy, for example. But there's enough free content to see if you like it or not.

Hmmm OK so I've tried Vindictus and... well I liked it (altought there is too many features you have to pay for :S) but my computer EXPLODES with this game. I don't know why. I can run WoW to 40-50 stable FPS in 10 man raid with normal graphics (laptops, you know) but Vindictus with extremely low graphic settings... it just explodes. I have no idea why, but it does.

I will go for sw:tor and ddo next. Thx for the replies again! :3

By massive P2W I assume you mean top end gear purchasable with money?

Try Allods Online. I didn't hear much good about gpotatoes running it (they bought license to run English version of game, and free to change/do with AO what they want), but in it's homeland it is actually quite decent MMO. It reminds WoW a lot, but it is f2p based on cash shop (cash shop doesn't sell game-breaking items you can't get any other way around).

Well it is a F2P game afterall, they have to make money somehow. In the past they've been really good about keeping pay2win at a minimum, but more recently stepped over that line a bit in the form of "limited pay2win offers" in the cash shop. The only thing in Vindictus I really really needed was the extra inventory slots, but that's because I'm a packrat with the crafting mats.

Sucks that it doesn't perform well enough for you. It probably has something to do with the laptop since the game does have steep system requirements for being an older game. I'm not sure where you're judging the performance by in-game though, but if your computer is exploding in town, well everybody's system does including mine since it likes to auto switch channels to a highly populated one.

Which was their main selling point early on.

I think it's nice to just have play the story line for free, or well the $15 one time payment I believe is what they said.
It is 8 paths you can play for the class's storyline.

I know I'd go back and play after my IA and SW was 50. Just to play the storyline of the other ones.

If Allods still sells Incense that increases your Damage/Health/Healing by 200% for a day or w/e in the shop, and balances the game around you having to have it on at all times after like level 10 then I would avoid it like the plague. Game was fun until I found out that it was nigh impossible to do anything after the starting zone without spending $.50 a day on Incense.
That was awhile ago though, and could be a completely fair F2P model now.

If you are willing to step away from the fantasy genre I'd recommend DCUO. That game is good quality and the production value is pretty high. The voice work and the solo instances are pretty awesome. Some of the quests are a little challenging. I think you need to pay to raid at level cap or something but I haven't gotten that far.

SWTOR is going F2P soon with a similar model (free to level cap and then you pay kind of thing). Its actually a pretty good game, it just felt too linear and restrictive and the worlds felt fairly stagnate for me to want to cough up a monthly fee.

It isn't. I really liked beta as well but once I got my hands on the game I really struggled to get past level 30 and ended up quitting by level 35. To me it just felt like I was doing the same exact five quests over and over again like a Korean grindfest. So what you do at level 3 is what you will be doing over and over again to at least level 35. Perhaps its better at 80 but I doubt it. sPvP felt insignificant as people would just drop your team with no consequence the second you started to trail in points. Also, there is nothing to work toward other than cosmetic differences which don't matter because you are in all blue or all red inside the match. All the sPvP games/maps feel exactly the same (probably so they could sell themselves as an e-sport, GL with that). WoW, Rift, and SWTOR all have multiple maps with different playstyles attached to them. WvW was boring and your contribution is almost nothing...its just who has the biggest zerg.
