Well, what can I say, well done Google for supporting this. Though I'm sure they're not supporting it out of their kind heart alone, still well done.

In democratic countries, it does matter A LOT.

No, it matters in democratic countries with a high standard of living where 50%+ have computers and net.

My country, Romania, is a "democratic" country, but if the internet users would threaten the representatives they wouldn't vote for them, they'd laugh in our face for the poor population will still vote for them for some sacks of potatoes or some money.

Personally I consider the "world wide web" we have today as more of an aberration, and have been waiting for governments to start chopping it up. This seems like a perfect time to update the ITU treaty and give each government a greater role in controlling and taxing it.

And I'm of the exact opposite view of yours. I think the internet is the only free environment that actually links people across nationality, home country, colour, race, religion etc. Sure, in some ways it can be the exact opposite, but in many ways the internet now is quite ... don't know how to say, free. It gives everyone the possibility to connect with anyone, no matter how different they are from them in so many ways or it gives a possibility for those alike to find eachother across the world.

The internet is as free as it can be and I'd never want the corrupt pathetic gouvernments of the world to start chopping it up ever. It should live as it is(well, except in countries that censor lots of crap, where they should stop that).

Google is the reason the internet isn't in the same shitty state it was back in 2000 or so.

Beyond just the magical search engine and using their stupid amounts of money to improve youtube to the level that is today.

And then there are other minor things like creating the world's first self driving car, mapping the world to an insane degree of accuracy and coverage and making it available to everyone for free, giving away a smart phone for literally free, breaking the monopoly in ISPs that have had the US by the balls for the entire history of the internet period by introducing 10x speeds, uncapped.

They own so much fiber in the US its to the point they pay such a negligible amount of bandwidth they don't even mark it down any more.
ISPs actually pay to rent google's lines.

Their entire livelihood depends entirely on a free and uncontrolled global internet. They should be threatening boycotts and pulling out of the US if the US senate ever tries this kind of bullshit. No matter how stupid and archaic the leaders are they still know losing a MASSIVE company like google would kill their economy pretty much on the spot.
