The smoke from the pipe is all flargen. When he rides the pony it looks like a piece of cardboard and Gollum just looks to "shiny", but perhaps that's just how he was animated. Originally Posted by Asmekiel

The thing that bothers me the most about The Hobbit is that fact that it looks like they went heavy on the CGI or just went with a different aesthetic style. Not really sure how to explain it.
