Tired of people making fun of my Win RT purchase

"Dude, why wouldn't you wait for windows surface pro? Surface RT is so dumb it can't even run regular windows program."

When you all bought your iPad I didn't say "Wow, why the fuck would you get an iPad? It doesn't even run any Mac software"

No shit, you're missing the point of a tablet, why the hell would I want legacy software on my tablet (and why would I even be expecting it...?). Surface Pro has the ability to run legacy software, which I think is a huge incredible plus. But the fact that Surface RT cannot is not a negative. It's like expecting your new car to have wings which would be awesome, but if it doesn't you're not gonna whine about it because why would it have wings in the first place?

I see this in every comment section of reviews, open box videos, benchmark sites, everywhere. Just had to vent, hopefully everyone on this great forum can help quench the flames of rabid Apple and Windows Pro fan boys.

The surface pro would be better for me, but the battery life on it is going to be crap. Personally I would also go for a cheap android tablet over a win rt one at the moment(cheaper and does what I need) Screw apple though sure it looks nice and is built well but overpriced and iOS will be dead soon enough anyway people are starting to wake up to the apple Fad finally.

Do what I do: tell them to go fuck themselves.

I want the Surface too, just for the sake of having it.

No trace of that? I don't see people realizing Apple is overpriced and all.

If it does what you want it to do, no more, no less, then honestly the best defense you have versus the naysayers is just telling them exactly that - it does what I need it to do for me. Don't rage. Don't display any negative emotions.

If they persist, simply turn the question back on them. Ask when was the last time they bought something, and they got no end of grief for it. Share stories. Turn the spotlight on them.

I still don't see the point of tablets for non-business applications.

I have one for myself: I am a tech addict.

I mean, to be fair, I think they're fun toys. If someone gave me one for Christmas, I'd use it and probably enjoy it. There's just nothing that I can really say that I need it for, and I don't have sufficient expendable income to drop the money on a tablet, there's just too many other things I'd rather have.

Well, I mean, you obviously have at least one video game.

Artists and Writer's generally tend to love them. Never know when the creativity bug will bite.

Right. I guess I'm not following? Just saying that people buy things that are fun? Sure, I buy that totally. I don't mean to sound like I'm ripping on someone that likes their tablet, that's not what I'm saying. Well, I guess I did sort of say that, but it's still not my intention. I spent a dopey amount on a bike when one that costs half as much would have done just fine.

All I meant to say is that I feel like tablets fill a niche that's remarkably practically narrow. They're cool though.

That makes sense. Well, the art part does anyway. Not sure what writers getting there that they wouldn't with an ultrabook or pen and paper.

There are certainly no situations where some NEEDS a tablet. There are lots of things work related that make life easier...and there are lots of things that make life easier for personal matters as well.

In my field we have to carry about 50lbs worth of books with us, through airports all day. With one Ipad I can go from 50lbs of books and a large chart case to 1lb in a nice small sleeve. Wow easier.

As for personal use, I'm largely with you. There is no NEED for one...but plenty of WANTS to be filled. Personally I can't think of anything I would do on a tablet that I can't do on my phone.
Get a grip man! It's CHEESE!

I use my Surface RT for school. Take notes (I fall asleep and otherwise dont pay attention when I have pen and paper), and if i
m getting drowsy, I split the screen and have 2 apps on at a time, taking notes on one side, browsing the web or playing a simple game on the other. It's the most handiest thing for me. I don't want to lug around an ultra book, even though they are light and small, it just doesn't compare with this thing

Yeah, I can see a million professional uses for them. Another one that is big in my line of work (biomedical research) is that people like to bring them to conferences because they can use them to take notes during talks, screenshots of posters that they can put another additional notes on, and look up papers on the fly in an easily readable fashion. For sales people that come to labs, they seem pretty invaluable, as the alternative is walking around with catalogs. Being able to present things on the fly is killer.

That's where I'm at as well. I suppose if I had one, I'd use it for a lot of things I use my phone for currently, and it'd probably be handier for some of them. I probably sounded more haterish than I really intended to. It was more intended like, "the OP has people hating on him for choice of tablet, and I barely get tablets at all!". Well, that's what was in my head.

I'm basically saying that the reason people get them besides work is that they are entertained by them in some way. Some people like the sensation of using their fingers to directly press stuff on the screen rather than using peripheral interface devices.

If you already knew this, then you probably meant more "I don't find this stuff fun or uniquely intriguing in the same way others do."

To go along with no one needs one but it makes certain tasks easier.....

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to do exactly what the name implies, take notes in school. I honestly think its the greatest revolution in note taking (inb4 flaming). I can take notes on the bottom half of the screen and view the powerpoint that my teacher is using on the top half. And if I wanted I can just click and drag on an image from the powerpoint and its automatically in my notes.

Could I take notes in a notebook? Sure I could, but my galaxy note 10.1 makes it so much easier.

Cool! So why are people hating on the RT relative to the Pro? Is this just one of those, "hah, your version is OLD!" things?

This thread makes me feel dated, and I'm not actually old :-\

    Jks, jks.

I agree with Spectral, a tablet is a great gift, but it's such a narrow niche...

Tablets that use Surface Pro are x86 processor architect, while Windows RT is ARM processors. Because of this, a program such as Starcraft would not work on an ARM processor. Most of the bashing is from Apple people saying "Windows RT is stupid because it doesn't run legacy programs like regular windows."

The problem is, I don't want to double the cost of my tablet just to have the option of playing starcraft on or any other legacy software. If I want to play starcraft, I'll put it on my dang real computer. But it's like me making fun of their iPads becasue they can't run regular mac programs. I mean, at least we have an option for legacy support in windows tablets now, which is something new and never been done before.

hospitals and doctors use iPads for medical apps. They do have business use especially when the clinical world is concerned.
