If you return them and want to buy another headphone please follow recomendations from people that actually know about headphones. The folks at head-fi can help you
Yeah, if you are looking to spend more than 100 bucks on a headset/headphones, go to a specialist shop to get advice from an expert.
A mate of mine uses these, he went through a bunch of headphones including some Turtle Beach and other brands before grabbing the Dr Dre ones while he was on holiday in America. I have no personal experience with them but he loves them, (he is a musician too, with a fair bit of studio and live experience). These Dr Dre headphones have almost a notoriously bad reputation for being overpriced to the point where it has become the cool thing to do.
I start to question whether peoples opinions of these are overdone and are formed directly based on what others have said, rather than from a genuine and unbiased observation. Like I said, I haven't tried them.. All I've seen is hordes of people (most of whom have never tried them) go on about how bad and overpriced they are, and one owner who admits he thinks they are actually quite good.
As for what I would do in the situation? I have no idea.

Probably running on a Pentium 4
Get a pair of MDR-7506's, they're pretty much the industry standard for studio headphones. Plus they're only $90.

They're not the WORST headphones on the market, but they may very well be some of the most overpriced! They're good for bass driven music but I would rather have my Shure buds than the Dre cans any day of the week, they aren't strictly a fashion accessory, but they're not far off it!

Beats headphones by Dr. Dre are only popular for the name that's slapped onto the product and the extra heavy bass that it's universally known for. Way overpriced considering there are far better for much cheaper.
...I don't know if I was just raised in a different time than everyone else or just raised differently period but I'm surprised at the responses. I would never return a gift.
"Hey, how are those headphones I got you?"
"Oh those, I returned them and bought a pair that's even better."
That just sounds so...wrong. Especially with an expensive gift. Was the gift a waste of money on the part of the giver? Probably. But so was the Christmas sweater that my grandma bought me, that I wear every Christmas when I visit. Or the very nice coffee maker that my aunt got me (I don't drink coffee), that I now use to make tea every now and then. I'm sure the lack of quality is being greatly exaggerated anyway. Bad quality for the price? Sure. Will they rape your eardrums and drive you crazy? No.
Regardless of what people may say, Beats do sound good. They may have little to much bass, but overall they do have really good sound. However they are overpriced, I would say by a good 25% or more compared to other headphones of similar sound quality. They do have a cool look though. A bit like the alienware desktops of headphones. Take that as a complement or a detraction.
Not really, there are $30-40 headphones that sound better than beats, I can agree that beats aren't bad, but they aren't good either, just look how they are ranked on audiophile sites: http://www.head-fi.org/t/433318/shoo...added-12-02-12
if you want a quality headset compared to the cash you throw after it, Beats by dre are definitely not the way to go, they might be fine headphones but the prize is that high not due to sublime quality but rather for the name.
I see no problem in returning them.
Make it clear to the person whom gifted them to you that you wish to return it. I wouldn't say that telling them they wasted their money is rude or disrespectful. Hopefully they will understand.
If you wanted a video game, for example, and got a nice sweater and returned it simply because it wasn't a gift you wanted, I'd call it ungrateful... but, in this situation, no.
I would go buy a Bose or Sennheiser set.
