Why does everyone assume the speed of light is the fastest we can go?

This really perplexes me sometimes. Why does EVERYONE assume and think that the speed of light is the fastest speed we can go? Just cause we havent discovered how to or understand the science behind it doesnt mean that the speed of light is the fastest and ONLY way we can go.

I don't know, maybe you should actually study some physics and history of science?

I don't think many people assume that at all, but rather keep it in consideration as a possible restriction.

There's no proof that anything in the universe travels faster than light. That makes it a pretty plausible assumption.

Maybe because it's been established scientifically that it would require an infinite amount of energy to go the speed of light?

    It's not an assumption.

In normal scenarios it is prohibited by relativity, which established that the speed of light is the universal speed limit of the universe.

With our current understanding our theories state that the speed of light is a universal constant.

That does not mean to say our understanding is 100% correct. It's just the best we have with current theories and observations. Just last year research suggested that our current understanding of the speed of light is incorrect or incomplete. The research as far as I'm aware is in the process of being double checked and re-ran to check for errors either in the equipment, the measurements themselves.

That's the beauty of science. It can adjust itself based on what is observed. If our understanding is wrong and you can go faster than the speed of light then it will adapt. As it currently stands however we have no conclusive proof you can go faster than light nor do we have proof that our understanding is complete.

this. please google before asking obvious questions like that.

There is no proof in god yet billions of people worship like sheep everyday lol

Just because our science cant understand or we haven't discovered yet, doesnt mean that we cannot go faster than the speed of light

    Infracted.

Immature people want to fantazise about humanity exploring space in ways described in popular fiction and really hate the idea that it might never be feasible.

Just because you can't understand why science says speed of light is the limit, doesn't mean that your argument from ignorance has value.

I'm not really sure, but it has to do with Einstein and E=mc²

Because believing in things with no scientific basis is dumb.

    Generally because E = mc2
The closer you'd get to the speed of light, the higher mass you'd get. The more energy it would take to move the same object at a higher speed. Most physicists assume that it's impossible for anything with mass even accelerating up to the speed of light.

People assume that our primitive physics is the end all and be all.

I don't think it is the limit, but I feel it is the limit of most things in the universe. The travel above the Speed of Light is insane, beyond insane, but I don't think impossible.

Well if this is the case, and the universe is infinite.. The entire night sky should be white, which it aint. Meaning that the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light - well the objects within travel faster than the speed light away from each other.

And also, what Regennis said... but then again - How would you travel faster than that which has no mass... How would you transport yourself... It's more a fact that nothing can nor will be able to travel at that speed, however something close could possibly be quite possible.

Actually in science fiction, they do not travel faster then the speed of light, because thats impossible, to solve this problem they use warp-drive (extraction and detraction of SpaceTime)

It's not an assumption! You can get closer and closer but you'll never get there, because it would require infinite energy.

Not always. You can have faith / belief in something.**

** Religion ≠ Faith / belief, just to clarify
