Yes. They stop the excess flow of air that ruins the sound, but allows the actual sound to still come through since it's a nice thin material. This is the one I have. You can replicate the same idea if you have a round screen such as a cross stitch loop and some pantyhose, but honestly, it's much easier and more sturdy to just get a legitimate pop filter.

And yes, you should try to get one. There are cheaper ones than what I got, but the reviews I read seemed to show that they don't last very long, that the gooseneck isn't very stable or the filter likes to slide around. I'm veeeery happy with mine.

Hah, we had a little hot tub thing outside a couple of years ago. Even after cleaning beforehand and filling with clean water, there would always be some tiny bits of dirt or whatever. So to fish it up, we threaded some pantyhose over a tennis racket and used that to fish it out with.
