Those are short term things. They change constantly yes, but that's not what I'm talking about.

A lot of things you did in WoW were long term, you spend weeks if not months on end raiding to get a collection of top end gear. A single patch makes it all obsolete, forcing you to do it all over again. Your top end gear you labored for is sold for 6 gold at a vendor because the next expansion green is Superior to it.

If you are top end there is never a green that beats it. I have been top end from BC to now and I can guarantee that greens just didn't replace my gear. I had to get to the max level and even then had a tough time finding replacements for such gear. In Wrath I was in Sunwell gear and the only piece I replaced leveling in Wrath was one ring. One. By the time I beat Naxx I still had a quarter of the gear I had from BC.

I have no idea where this idea came from. Vanilla to BC was the only time where that happened, but most only had ZG/MC epics, which wasn't exactly top end, but more like top start.

In life, you are always moving towards a long term goal. When you reach that long term goal, life doesn't patch itself and make your long term goal obsolete instantly. Life allows you to enjoy your long term goal once it was completed. You can finally stop laboring, and sip a beer on a beach.
(and yes, we can nit-pick that life can get royally fucked over, ruining your long term goal, but that's hardly relevant.)

Yeah, you can say "it's a video game" and I found it fun for a time to always have a new goal every patch. But after years of it, my god did it get old to have my labor thrown out the window.

I actually had something for this, but all it turned into was a big depression filled rant, so I will just say that you are wrong and life sure does has it's way of making hard work obsolete instantly.

Nah, I disagree. Friends come and go, along with other things, but you are always working towards a long term goal and everything you do should be set to it. I like to not get wrapped up on the short term because a lot of times, it doesn't matter.

Eh, to put it simply. I realized MMO's were no longer my thing. Too much involvement, and felt like a slap in the face when it was all for nothing.

For WoW at least that was definitely what drove me off. I just get a full set of powerful armor, only for it to be completely useless and put in the welfare epic vendor a week later. Tediously trained fishing? Lol fishing skill means nothing now. Worked to get that kalu'ak fishing pole? So they make all quests supply you underwater breathing and 500% swim speed.

Blargh i need to get good with watercolor. It's so much fun to use and you can do very nice things with it, but my skill level with it is pretty low. Lower than my skill level with oil paint and my skill level with THAT is kind of low.
