Considering the only manual vehicle I have driven is a van, that might have something to do with my utter hatred of it.

Vans drive rather weird if you aren't used to it. Big, clunky and very susceptible to wind, takes a bit of getting used to. Manual still reigns supreme and shouldn't really influence the driving all that much.

Not in Australia, still gets covered by a car license.

In germany you can drive anything with four wheels up to 3.5 tonnes total weight with a class B car licence. For larger vehicles you need a truck licence; I have one of those (for medium trucks with trailer for up to 11 tonnes), thanks to the military who kindly gifted that one to me. But a normal 9 person van or transporter you can drive with a simple car licence.
