With the way you described you are only getting him out is real close to magical chrismasland. But on turn 4 they most likely have some sort of removal. In Standard you are going to be hit by Supreme Verdict or Terminus. If it is outside of that people are splashing colors for removal like Path to Exile, and that doesn't even include the dozens of black removal that is in the other formats. You could protect him by giving him hexproof, but that just means more cards and waiting to cast him another turn and people will use a board wipe to get rid of mana so that way shenanigans don't ensue.

Eh, like I said, he's a crapshoot, but he can be a clincher in a tight game if he's played right and you have enough threat to make your opponent expend their removal.

Thragtusk is awesome, but red/green isn't really the best deck to capitalize on his unique abilities.

You don't need a deck to capitalize on Thragtusk because you already did by playing him. 5 life and 2 bodies for 5 is good enoguh without needing Cloudshift or Restoration Angel.

Batterskull wasn't what increased the price of Stoneforge Mystic. It was Sword of Feast and Famine that did it, because untapping your lands in a control deck was amazing, Batterskull was just 8 feet of icing on the cake, not to mention Sword of War and Peace.

I'm gonna build a casual deck around the red enchant that says tap a gate to deal 1 damage to target creature or player.

Putting all gates in the deck. Bust out those enchants, use the splash mana to protect myself.

While that is very true, if you are playing enough threats then you will probably have your opponent dead or close to that already. Right now the 3 and 4 drops are ruling almost everything right now with Olivia and Thragtusk being the 5 drops that back them up.

Unfortunately Crackling Gate reads "Tap an untapped Gate you control: Crackling Gate deals one damage to each opponent."

If it was creature or player it would be amazing, but alas it does not do that.

It is indeed powerful, but without SFM it doesn't have a whole lot of power. You usually see it as a one of in sideboards in a lot of Modern decks right now.
