    Who thinks they can Math correctly?

    I was hanging out in that weird part of the internet again and I stumbled across this weird math problem on multiple forums and it struck me that there are quite a lot of people that have no idea what the proper order of operations is or simply take it upon themselves to add things into the problem

    The problem:

    1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1x0 =?
    Answer:

    (1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1)+(1x0) =
    14+0=
    14




    Another Troll Math question for boredom. 48÷2(9+3) = ? -- Can be 2 or 288 depending on what order you use as well as implied multiplication and the actual rules of the ÷ itself.

    Anyone who doesn't pick 14 is either trolling or needs to repeat 2nd grade. This troll math comes up every once in a while and bad people who don't know about parentheses will pick 0.

    How did anyone come up with 4?

    People seem to think that Addition comes before Subtraction so they end up doing 10-6 = 4. I have the same opinion as you, which is why I was shocked when I saw how many people would say 0 even after the math was explained many times.

    y should repalce 4 with answer 16. That way people who miss the subtraction will have an answer to chose

    Order of operations is merely a convenience of notation. You could create a system of notation exactly equivalent to our own where multiplication comes before addition and it wouldn't change anything in our understanding of mathematics other than requiring reformatting of textbooks.

    Order of operations is not some meaningful insight into the nature of the universe. It's fairly arbitrary.

    This is true, though Mathematics requires rules and laws in order for it to be accurate. The order of operations is the set of rules governing how simple mathematics handles certain types of problems. If there were no rules, 2+2 could equal fish and Mathematics would simply become a meaningless and inaccurate system, a similar concept applies with the scientific method in science. The system is put in place as a way to make the system concise and give a set order of things.

    I learned PEMDAS in school. Never heard of BODMAS/BIDMAS till fairly recently. Same thing, just different words. I never liked using brackets anyway..

    It may be arbitrary, but it's important. Order of operations is there to make sure we're all on the same page.

    It would seem like that's harder. I actually did Calculus once because I needed a break from Algebra
