This doesn't make any sense. Sure he COULD'VE gotten a dog from a dog asylum, but what would happen to the puppies from the breeders? They would simply be neglected because of the large amount of puppies/dogs said breeder would've had. Or they would go to a dog asylum too. Not to mention some people would rather have a young puppy, instead of any already older dog who sometimes have problems, diseases, anxiety issues etc. because of their genes and stuff.

On-topic though, I've always LOVED dogs. Both my parents had dogs when they were kids, but I've never had one . I've only ever had cats, who are also cute.. when they're young. And they pass away quicker, don't they? (talking about cats) Oh well, I'll most likely got myself a dog too when I'm on my own, they're just TOO cute!

Edit: Just for the ones who want to know: I'll most likely be getting a welsh corgi. They're so cute! XD

I love dogs, though my husband and I don't have one currently. I think it's a shame that people paint all breeders the same color. There are wonderful breeders out there who are responsible and take care of their animals. One of the dogs my parents have is a pekingese from a breeder who'd heard we'd lost ours. She'd been thinking of keeping a pup that hadn't sold, but offered her to us instead. Yuki's a great little dog and, even though you haven't met her yet, she is YOUR BEST FRIEND. Trust her on this.

There are horrible breeders out there as well. Another family dog was a Shetland Sheepdog. A rescue group had gotten her after the breeder had left her with untreated skin cancer. That poor dog had spent 99% of her life before coming to us in a kennel, let out once a day to use the bathroom. She had a harder time adjusting, but she did relatively well. She was skittish and really only trusted my dad and me.

There are also horrible PEOPLE out there. People who get a puppy because it's small and cute and turn it into a shelter when it grows into a dog. People who don't fix their dog, but can't afford the prenatal care or puppies, and so they turn them in (and that's if they're at least semi-responsible!). One of the shelters near us had a whole bunch of cats and kittens that had been seized in a raid on a hoarder's house. Many of the dogs I grew up with weren't purebreds or anything like that. They were dogs who were dumped and were lucky enough to be found by us or find us when they were dumped because of this insane concept that domestic dogs will do just fine in the wild.

Once my husband and I can get our fence fixed, we'll get a dog. It might be from a rescue society. It might be from a shelter. It might be from a responsible breeder. In any case, what we WILL do is be responsible owners who love and care for the animal.

It honestly depends. My husband and I have a Russian Blue mix who will be 17 this summer. Aside from slight arthritis that bugs her when it's cold, she's still doing great. For other domestic cats, 13-14 is old. It's the same with dogs. Different breeds have different life-spans.

Wish I had time for a dog these days though, I'm just away from home a good 14 hours a day =(
I say "bah" to that bite risk crap. I have 2 dogs that are on the dangerous dog list, and they are absurdly sweet. My oldest is actually on there twice. Chow and German Shepherd, and the most she will do is lick you to death. She is the sweetest old girl I have ever met. She won't shut her mouth, which gets on my nerves, but she would never bite. And my husky is super sweet too, though she is a bit of a "diva" (god I hate that word), and can be a little bitch (pun intended) to the chow/gsd mix. http://www.forbes.com/sites/cateyhil...s-and-renters/ <-- biggest bullshit in the world. Except for the wolf hybrids (as, come one, they're part wolf), I have never met a mean dog on that list (never met a presa canarios). There's a dobie down the street, and she is sweet and playful. Also came across a few pit bull strays that weren't mean either.

As has been said many times: it is how they are raised. And DO NOT get into the whole "some dogs are more prone to it" BS either (not singling out a single person), as that doesn't belong in here. There is, however, a somewhat aggressive golden retriever (yes, a golden retriever) on my street that barks at me and my dogs when we go for a walk. And not the "hey there's someone there let me make sure they know I am here" type bark, but the "if I could jump over this fence I will bite the crap out of you" type bark, though not as severe as you see on TV shows or movies that show an aggressive bark.

We have one that will be 18 in the summer. He's not as kitten-like as he used to be only 2 years ago. His bro died when they were 15, and he hasn't been as hyper as he was when his bro was alive.

so i just heard from BBC that dog chipping will be mandatory in the UK soon. this is good news! really no reason not to microchip your dog if you care about it. the purpose of making it mandatory is to stop irresponsable owners abandoning their dogs.

I love dogs, but I abhor the idea of breeding animals as pets. I think owning a pet is a privilege that must be earned, not something you can just buy your kid to shut him up.

I have a 7 year old Beagle named Nitro ( My Wifes Dog) he is a little bastard, but she loves hit. After him I said no more dogs so what does she do she gets an Englis Bulldog from her cousin that breeds them and brings her home knowing full well I would fall in love with her which I did, well needless to say she is my dog. Ever seen the movie UP? if you have I feel my bull dog would sound like doug. Her name is Tankerbell or "Tank" for short she is 2 years old and has her own crazy personality.

Both of my dogs have come from breeders, I don't want to go to a shelter and pay $100.00 for some dog some other asshole has already ruined when I can get them as a puppy and train them right myself. Plus I am one to own only purebred dogs and not big fans of mutts.

    lol :P

reminds me, when we first got our puppy he found this plant pot he loved sitting in, in the garden. he was so tiny he fit in the plant pot. but a few months later he had grown so much he couldn't fit in, but he still tried to sit in it all the time, but usually just fell over trying to get his legs in :P

Yet, assuming the dog you get from the shelter came from a breeder, it means one less dog is bought from a breeder, and thus is put in a shelter (assuming all breeders put their unsold "goods" in shelters). Basically, it doesn't matter where you get it in that case, as you save one dog from a shelter either way.

Also, if you get a dog that WASN'T from a breeder, you actually contribute to putting more dogs from breeders in shelters.
