    Pope Benedict XVI to resign

Packing his bags end of this month. Do we really need a new Pope now?

This may be good for the Catholic Church, a new Pope brings a chance for a new message that may appeal to a broader base.

I think we all know in what direction this thread will develop.
In before another round of religion bashing.

Don't derail the thread by bringing it up

We are wondering in the office what's the reason. Some theories:

"Guys, I have realized that I'm an atheist. Sorry"
"I've been a zen-buddhist all the time, TROLOLO"

On a serious note, he's just old and tired and probably wants to relax.

Normally, they can't - this is the first time something like that happens since 1240 or so.

The history nerd in me says Gregorius XII in 1450 (I did not had to look it up, shutup I'm trying to sound smart on the internet)
Probably has to do with him trying push the Sith lord agenda on the vatican

The 85-year-old pope said he had noticed that his strength had deteriorated over recent months "to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me".

I don't think i've heard of a pope retiring before though honestly, i don't care to put enough attention to check haha. However, it's nice that his resignation also co-incides with massive investigations into the church abuse scandals.. Ah well.
