Got a question for upgrading gear, which costs Legendary Marks.
Currently my Sword is light level 259, I have a spare 280 heavy weapon I can dismantle to increase it, but I was wondering if I should wait till I had a higher piece to upgrade it.
What's the general rule for upgrading? Is there a maximum amount it can upgrade at a time?

The higher your light level the higher items decrypted become on average. So waiting is actually a waste. Plus if you ever want the exotic version of your sword you should know there's some seriously brutal work involved and getting it to level 280+ is merely the first step.
[edit] also to add that unless you are looking for s specific slot for gear and have a higher light level main/alt whatever, bank your engrams, have the highest level character decrypt them and you'll get better fusion fodder a lot faster. Sent engrams that weren't for the slots my Titan needed to my hunter and got his weapons infused to 280+ in mere minutes.

This should help you out: http://infusioncalculator.hamnation.com/
iirc, I think it will infuse to about 80-90% of the difference between the two item's level.
So generally if you want to get a piece to a close as possible to the higher rating one, you want to take it steps at a time so the gap between them is less. When it's about a gap of ~4 light on the item, it will then go up to the full value. But you should be able to find plenty of 280+ pieces as you gear up more, so it may be worth just infusing the 259 with the 280.

Does anyone know also, If we get the exotic version of the sword can we get another Legendary one on that character or would we need to get an alts?

Pretty sure you need alts to get more than one type of sword. I finished the quest for the exotic on my Titan and didn't receive another sword option. Did get them on my Warlock/Hunter though.
Also, if you do happen to finish the sword on one character and need to do it on another, make the sword on the alt charaacter with the 25 Hadium Flakes, and then switch it over to the character you had already completed the Exotic on. Level it up/upgrade it on the character that was already complete and you can skip the Crucible/Major kills step completely. You need to make sure you don't level it up/upgrade it on a character that hasn't completed the quest though, otherwise will need to do the Crucible/Major kills step again.

Anyway, I've been enjoying destiny. Can't wait to try out the raid, still gearing out. Only at 281 on my main (titan)

Ok, I'm sure this has been covered but I'm 100% new to the game and since Taken King just came out I figure it would be a good time to pop in. I got an early Christmas present from my awesome wife of the Legendary Destiny PS4 bundle with the fancy white console with graphics on it.
I had heard bad things about Destiny in the past, but it seems like Taken King made the game rather superb. I'm not really a shooter person either, but the way the game feels and the aesthetic is quite enjoyable. I've been trying to get away from my desk/computer for some time and this is going to do the trick.
Even though I got the item to jump to level 25, I decided to play it out the long way. Just hit 27 and started Taken King stuff after completing the entire base story, house of wolves, and dark below up to the strike. I have a couple of questions:
1) Will Taken King story get me to 40 (with bounties as well) or do I need to grind it out in patrols and stuff?
2) Once you hit 40, are raids the only way to improve gear and get legendary marks or whatever?
3) Essentially, since I know this has probably been discussed, in short form what is the end game for gear? Is it a progression or just a couple of different modes that you acquire currency through?
BAD WOLF
1) just about, you might have to do some other side quests and things.
2) No there are strikes (like wow dungeons) and PvP
3) There is some progression, you get higher stat gear based on your current gear, plus raids drop higher stat gear, the raid and the hardmode raid will drop even higher.
So tried King's Fall last night, started in at the Ogre after being in LFG for roughly an hour. Took about 1-2 hours to get the Ogre down, but once we got our strat it was fairly easy. Went and did the daughters of Oryx, which is really a precursor to teaching you the mechanics for P1 of Oryx. Then I spent the next 8 hours wiping on Oryx, never leaving Phase 1. It's a fantastic fight, really a punch in the stomach because if you don't execute it perfectly you'll wipe at almost any point. I'm really looking forward to downing it and moving on to hard mode, cause if normal is this hard, I can't wait to see what else they do.
For anyone attempting Oryx, I highly recommend (almost required) to have a Weapons of Light bubble titan, it's doable without one, but much much MUCH harder.
Good news, finally hit 297 light (the dream) so finding groups won't be super difficult now.
What PvP mode is best to do the 25 Guardian kills with the Sword? I usually get stomped when I try to take heavy ammo. Have been at 8 kills for ages now.
GL with all the shotguns and fusions tho Sword without ammo is way too slow to react.
Just got a rift game where I got to 14 kills ( would have been 16 but fuck you shotgun wielders) so I hope that I get a few kills in the next few matches.

Seriously this is so frustrating. Everyone is rushing to heavy ammo once it becomes available (mostly 3 enemies at once) why didnt they just make it 15 kills or Even 10? Stupid PvP.
