Jumped back into this game yesterday after a long while and I noticed some better balance in PVP. Early on I was getting absolutely destroyed like getting 1 shot by players, which I'm guessing was because of gear, but it looks like they either made the matchmaking better to pair up people with similar gear levels or normalized it.
I was still doing terrible and getting close to 1-shot (not sure how or why) but I was still able to get a few headshots in and some kills at least as a noob and breaking even at least on K/D. It looks like I need to pick up a good shotgun because most of the times I was getting 1-shot, it was by that. It could be that my gear is just bad though. For example I'm 22 light and have a blue ~203 dmg Auto Rifle. Most of my kills are from camping as a sniper because I was able to pick up a Legendary 272 Sniper Rifle. It could just be most of the players I've encountered have invested more time than me and have full Legendary gear, where I only have blues and 1 Legendary special weapon. Either way I was having fun and that's really all that matters. When the game first game out I didn't feel like I even had a chance, but I'm guessing this game is more like WoW in that I'll need to grind some gear.
There are still some things I haven't figured out yet like all the reputations (just seems like a long grind) or what the hell I'm supposed to do with all of the materials I gathered... but I'm sure I'll figure it out in time. I love how the game feels, the driving, shooting, the music and aesthetic are all awesome. I imagine it will be better once I actually upgrade to a Next Gen (still on 360/PS3). While the story did leave me wanting, especially having learned about the original idea, it's still a fun game and glad I gave it another shot.
I think the only thing I still don't like in the game is how long the boss fights take in strikes. It got to the point where it's literally you just have to gimmick it because it's long as hell for no good reason and it's extremely repetitive. For example I'm doing the level 22 strike with the tank boss - I get in the vehicle, shoot the tank, swing back behind that pillar as he shoots the laser, swing back out and shoot, rinse & repeat for like 15min until he's dead. It's really unnecessary. The (?)Tarus boss at the end of the strike, basically just sit in this corner the whole fight and knick the health bar down.
I still like the feel of Call of Duty as well, but I think Bungie made a smart decision by transplanting a WoW/Rift/MMO loot system and having a persistent avatar into a shooter because it makes me more likely to stay playing for the RNG loot casino as well as making me feel like I'm working towards something with a character. This will at least hold me over until the new Gears of War comes out (soon I hope).
For the Destiny pros:
• What the hell do I do with the materials I gathered? Is there crafting?
• Is gear a big issue in PVP?
MAts are used to upgrade your armor and weapons.
Gear is not really an issue when doing regular crucible since its normalized. Iron Banner pvp is when gear really matters, the better gear you have, the more youre going to murder people less geared than you.

So far I've only upgraded armor with Glimmer. The other mats I have are just sitting in my inventory and wasn't sure if there was like a crafting NPC somewhere, but couldn't find anything.
Is it just higher level gear that uses those mats? I wish I was near my Xbox, I would name a few things, but generally the stuff I've looted off the ground (helium, copper, etc) and the mats from Dismantling, I don't think I ever used.
It may be the case if its 20+ gear that requires it. Honestly i dont even remember low level gear cuz i was boosted straight thru to 20 pretty quickly.

Bought an exotic engram (helm, of course) from Xur at around 2:30 this morning, and as per usual, Rahool went douchbag troll mode on me, and gave me a hunter helm, Kucklebreaker Radar, I think it was. So now I need to get them last 9 levels on my hunter to get any good use out of it, and I just don't have the will to do it.

What's easier to get, Bad Juju, or Invective? Or, more importantly, I guess, what's better? I can get the bounty for one of them, or Thorn, but I tried Thorn in the past and got fed up with the PvP part (cos I suck at pvp like 80% of the time).

Bad Juju was easier for me, still some pvp but you dont lose points on it, just gotta grind a bit. If you plan on pvping more, Invective will be better. But if you just pve, Bad Juju is better. I may be biased though, love my pulse rifles.

Just got to wait for Xur to get his butt to the Tower tomorrow, then I can move onto the next stages to get Bad Juju.

Super Awesome Tip:
For the Thorn PvP portion, ask a friend to join a party with you. Go into a Rumble Match (Free for all). Find a nice tucked away corner and camp out. Equip a Void weapon, hopefully something like a shot gun or something. Have your friend run to your position and kill him. Rinse & Repeat until the bounty is done.
It is cheating, and people will look down on you. But who cares! You got one of the best handguns in the game now!

Fixed that for you.
While Thorn isn't terrible in PvE, it's simply outclassed by many other exotics when playing in PvE *cough* Gjallarhorn, Icebreaker, Bad Juju *cough*. Hell, even Fatebringer is generally better to use in PvE and it's just a Legendary gun with a max attack of 300 (a raid legendary mind you, but still).
But yeah, Thorn absolutely WRECKS in PvP. All three exotic hand cannons do.
I don't think they over buffed it....simply they put it where it should have been at launch. Thorn can still be beaten by the other two exotic handcannons, although it is good for post-mortem kills and getting kills while the enemy is trying to hide from you (after hitting them a couple times of course).
