Before 2000, the colors were pretty arbitrary as far as I remember. They often switched from election to election. Only from 2000 on has it remained standard.

Because GIF's and JPG's didn't exist in '84 and were barely used in '88, almost anything that's found on-line is a reproduction of today's terms... therefore, most graphics will show '84 and '88 as being Red for GOP and Blue for Demo's.
