Meh, my feelings about facebook are always changing over time. For a while I didn't care about it, but last month my uncle was in a fatal accident and facebook has been awesome. Between all the pictures, videos, stories, and condolences...just awesome. I can't even describe it, and it will all be there until my aunt decides to close the account but I don't see that ever happening.

well, i've been with my current girlfriend for a year next week, and i met her because she added me as friends on facebook, thinking i was hot. We were total strangers, but started writing with eachother, a week later we met IRL and fell in love.

and i find it nice to be able to stay in contact with people you haven't spoken too in a long time. I haven't seen my brother for almost 3 years, but i still know what he is doing.

ofcourse there is some downsides aswell, but there is with everything.

I know some people would say ''oh i use it to keep in contact with family'' since the invention of the telephone that doesn't seem like a legitimate purpose for using it.....

i think my iq dropped from reading this.
keeping in touch with family and friends is a perfect reason to use it. some people are social, some like you are not.
if you dont care to keep in touch with your friend then probably best you left it but it most likely wont go the way of the dodo bird. years ago there were hundreds of soda companies and hundreds of car companies now there are just a few compared to years ago when they first started and those all seem to be doing fine......im sure facebook will too. sure their stock isnt as high-priced as some thing but they arent hurting in the least. with the number of adverts and users i think they will be around long after you and your friend are dead.

How are the 12-16 year olds affecting you? Last I checked, you don't even need to associate yourself with them. They're on there because they can be...Hell, people make profiles on facebook and twitter for their PETS, sure it's stupid, but stupid people do what they do. I've never heard of "friendster", but I think you have way too much free time on your hands, try something productive instead of being on every social media site ever made.

I hope english is not your first language, if it is, then I agree that you should not continue to read anyone's "update status" or you may be going on SSI soon.

Do you think that facebook came before the telephone? Because it really sounds like you do. I'm sure some some people have family all over the world where it would be expensive to speak with them on the phone, so they use online communication instead.

Facebook is alright to keep in touch with people through messaging, but I don't do the "post" or "like" stuff, and I only have like 3-5 pics on there. I can't believe some people put like 2k pics on their profile; that's insane.

Yes, and the ones who send game invites those disappear from my friend list pretty quickly.

I completely agree that phone is no option for daily overseas contact, but my question was why alternatives other than social network sites are apparently no option for some people. If people can use facebook then obviously they have internet access so they can use e-mail or Skype-to-Skype free call too.

You mentioned that you prefer not to receive hundreds of e-mails from hundreds of people on regular basis, so you'd rather have em send all that stuff to facebook, that's of course all fine if that's the way you like it, but I honestly doubt majority of social networking users have that number of contacts they comunicate with on regular basis. Unless they count hundreds of their virtual "friends" they met on facebook.
So you just decided to completely ignore the part of my post about Skype? It's in the SAME sentence as the half you quoted. Unbelievable.

Also, very nice of you to insinuate that because I to you am an extenuating circumstance, that my reasons for using Facebook don't count legitimately.

I've already listed reasons why I use FB over Skype, and apparently they don't count either. Skype doesn't work too well when your conversations involve multiple friends in different timezones. On my FB page, I've had SEVERAL conversations(started usually via wall posts) involving myself, an Aussie friend, a Swede, and a Mexican. We're not all ON at the same time, so I might make a post(while simultaneously messaging a local friend in chat), the Swede responds several hours later, the Aussie responds after that and also replies to something the Swede said, and so on. Similarly, I can't post a Youtube link to a song I think my friends would like via Skype unless I'm Skyping with all 5 of them(which won't happen due to timezone issues), with FB, I can post the song, tag all 5, then each of them will see it when they check their own page. And this may well lead to a 5 way discussion about the song/band I posted. Now sure, I could do all that with a forum too, but...why go to the trouble of setting up and maintaining a forum when FB does it just as easily, for free?

Likewise, I can talk to people on FB while I'm at work. I work graveyard shift, and my bosses allow me to use the computer as much as I want(provided I'm not ignoring customers), however, they do not allow Skype, nor do they want me staying on the phone.

"I'm here to complain about something that has no impact on me!"

Yes you did use it, but after you're done with it, it has no impact on you in the least bit. So... yeah. Nothing to see here, folks, just some random person ranting.

Social networking type sites are a quick and convenient way of keeping in touch with friends, family, and the world in general. Belly-aching about it only makes one look silly. Good luck with having all those die out though.

This isn't a discussion at this point, it's just a bunch of people who are bitter because they can't handle themselves and are looking for any reason to discredit real uses for a piece of convenient technology.

It's fucking offensive that people come in here, demand examples, are given them, and then try to say "well you're not agreeing with me so it doesn't count".

Well I use Facebook to mainly communicate with my firends and family. It also is useful as many Android apps can be linked to a facebook account making it somewhat of a cloud service.

Unless you call family members once a day, a phone isn't as efficient at keeping up to date.

And while I'm not big on Facebook either, I can at least understand how it is useful in keeping in touch with people.

People have a lot of time invested into it to. People don't want to just change over to whatever thing comes around next. It's essentially the Apple of social networking sites.
You are posting in the wrong section. These are the Off-Topic forums. You might want to try the World of Warcraft -> General Discussion section.

I don't. Because of it, my peers and colleagues think I'm a soon to be serial killer, or a socially awkward freak. This is has caused me to despise that website, and I will stop at nothing to ridicule it until the day it's gone. Easy to understand, isn't it?

So uh... I don't know about you, but my Facebook consists of people that I grew up with, around my age, and people I actually know. I can't remember a time where I saw some random 12 year old's posts on my wall. So you saying that it is taken over by these youngin'... that is not a valid argument, as your Facebook is your Facebook, you allow what you want to see. Now for your point about the self loathing people and all that other jazz, you have the choice to hide those people's posts or delete them from your Facebook's existence. It is not Facebook's fault that you are associated with people like those. I know people who seem to have a "fabulous" life, because they like to show off what they are doing etc., honestly though, if you spend that much time on Facebook telling people about your life... how fabulous can it really be.
