Personally I believe that nerds make more money and have far more powerful positions in the world than any athlete could ever hope to have. I understand having a mixture of brains and brawn is probably best; however, if you could only choose one attribute, then brains are the stronger attribute. At least this is true in our modern world, but I don't know about the distant past.

As Chris Rock says, there's a difference between being rich and being wealthy. Lebron James is rich. The dude who pays his salary is wealthy. And I guarantee you he's a nerd.

Nerds become confined to middle-income jobs (usually) that are underpaid for the wealth of knowledge and tech they generate. They don't rule the world. The people who rule the world are those who know how to cheat, exploit, and smash their way to money, because they realize that money is power, and that's all they want.

I am not aware of what the current definition of nerd actually encompasses but if I go by the wikipedia description I'd have to go with no. If it is just muscle over brains...sure.
