School Desks Too Small For Obese Children

    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2...vier-u-s-kids/

I think the worse part about this is that every article I've seen says "the desks are too small."
So instead of spending money to get these fat children to exercise and eat better, they are just buying new desks for the obese ones.
These aren't the spoilers you're looking for.

    Move along.

To be fair, it's shocking how small those desks are. I was a skinny-ass kid, and I always felt cramped in those desks.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

The actual desks are way to small, but the chairs they are attacked too have always been fine for me and my classmates.

Come on reeve you are a giant >.> I think obese children are too obese for the chairs.
I guess I agree as well I didnt have space to put anything on them other than a single folder it was difficult to write notes from a book w/o having something fall off the desk

I wasn't a giant when I was a little kid. I was like 5'6" and 120 lbs. all the way up until the summer between 9th and 10th grade, when I grew to 6'3" over the course of that one summer, then went on to grow 2 more inches before stopping.

At different stages in elementary, jr high(middle school) and high school, I was too big for the desks.

I was never over weight. I was chubby after one summer for a period of a month or so, but as much exercise as I got, that went away super fast. I was just pretty tall as were most of the kids at my school. And I was mostly of normal build or on the thin side (if anything, I was always trying to gain weight).

There were two styles of desk. The style where the table portion extended back to the chair always seemed small. The style that was simply a chair with an attached square table always seemed to have more room. Much more room. But they took up more room. So in classrooms that needed to squish 30+ kids in, the narrower desks were tough fits and I was a fairly thin kid. Heck, in High School, I was 6'2" 155# and was cycling (this was in '85 when it was still very new in America. Most folks had never heard of Greg LeMond let alone Eddy Merckx or any other cycling great), so I was burning tons of calories.

Just remember that there are different types of desks. The narrow ones can be tough fits for even relatively thin folks. The square ones should have room for relatively hefty folks.

Thus, as with most internet conversations, when someone says "the desks are too small", we have to understand what they mean by "the desks". Which desks? Makes a difference.

Wow Reeve you're a freak. I wish I was that tall lol. I'm like 5' 10" and my I was always taller than my friends, but then they all grew to like 6 feet since high school ended and 2 years into college. I'm so jealous.

Someone link a picture to the chairs. I went to private school.

I'd have been really happy to stay 6' or 6'1".

In my case the middle school and college ones are equivalent to the ones in highschool except for the 100+ ppl classes that do have that small size of table top space.

I've only ever seen the college example size ones once. I couldn't get anything done the entire lesson just attempting to right things down and completely forsaking having the textbook anywhere by underneath the paper I was writing on with my pencil case on the floor.

Most of my classes were elementary school size table shared between 2/3/4 or high school size ones in exams.

I think the proper headline is "obese children too large for desks" not that the desks are too small.

They are fine the kids need to lose weight no reason to be 300 pounds and in 7th grade.

No, the desks are in fact too small, even for people that are not overweight. Fuck those little half desks, sometimes kids need a textbook and a notebook open at the same time >: |

Trying to do the maths here but it's not working... how would a bigger desk make any difference? surely if you were fat you'd move your chair back a bit and it'd be sorted?
I don't think this matters nearly as much as you think it does.
