NYC Sugary Drink Ban. What do you think?

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_1...-health-votes/

    TL;DR

Large sugary drinks are on their way out of New York City restaurants. New York City's Board of Health today passed a rule banning super-sized, sugary drinks at restaurants, concession stands and other eateries.

The ban passed Thursday will place a limit of 16-ounces on bottles and cups of sugar-containing sodas and other non-diet sweetened beverages beginning in March 2013.

The ban will apply in restaurants, fast-food chains, theaters, delis, office cafeterias and most other places that fall under the Board of Health's regulation. People who buy sugary drinks at such establishments will still have an option to purchase an additional 16-ounce beverage.

Exempt from the ban are sugary drinks sold at supermarkets or most convenience stores and alcoholic and dairy-based beverages sold at New York City eateries. ......ETC

Seems a bit strange, especially as it is explicitly stated that you can just buy 2 drinks rather than one larger one. I don't think this law is going to have much of an impact on the health of NY citizens.

That could be a possible deterrent though couldn't it? Who want's to pay for the same thing twice?

The entire point of the law is to make people that want more to stop and think, if only for a second. If people have one 32 oz cup, then they just keep mindlessly drinking from it. That's how people get fat. With two cups, even if it's the same total amount, they have to stop and think for a second before switching over or opening the new bottle.

It probably won't make a difference, but I understand the intent. I don't get why so few people understand the mayor's message.

In my opinion I think it is a god idea, but im not really sure how big of an impact it will make.

And if it works and provides good results, then it can be used in other places to. Dont really see a problem with it.

it is a good idea anything to cut down on the amount of crap people eat / drink.

people should eat/ drink less and lose some of the fat from shovelling this type of crap down your gullets.

How about the people who always buy bigger then 16oz drinks and will continue to do so and just carry an extra large sports mug with them in their car.

Seriously this ban is so freaken retarded if a person can just buy 2 of the same size drink. It solves nothing.

It's like the bitch who wants to put an extra 1% tax on mature rated games because it's corrupting the youth and causing people go to physco violent.

Yea a 1% tax will stop people from buying and prevent video games from making you go crazy.

If someone wants to buy a large drink, who the hell are YOU to tell them they can't?
Go live in a dictatorship if you want people to tell you how to live your life, or better yet, a prison.

I regularly get the 48oz big gulp on my way to the gym, does this upset someone?

Nice how a country based on freedoms to lead your own life (within reason) needs to forcibly stop people from making poor health choices... Like it'll really help.

What's next? It's illegal to consume X amount of calories a day? Maybe police can drive around with portable fat-sucking machines and have the right to use them on anyone who can't walk down the street without being jiggly?

If you're not free to make bad choices, you're not free.
I don't argue to be right, I argue to be proven wrong. Because I'm aware that the collective intelligence of the community likely has more to offer to me by enlightening me, than I do to an individual by "winning" an argument with them.

Actually, I'm from this nation, it's still a load of shit. Sure, obesity is still bad thing in this country, but this isn't how you go about trying to make people more healthy.

Government should at least promote eating healthy and wisely not "YOU CAN'T TAKE X DRINKS NOW CAUSE IT ILLEGAL HUR HUR." Not trying to insult anyone here, just pointing out what I feel.

Freedom is way too overrated anyways, as your signature said... people tend to think without having learned anything. So many people get lost without guidance, be it bad or good guidance.

I'm not sure on this half assed "ban" its a step in the right direction, we'll see how its going to turn out.

Less fat people = Less I have to shell out for Obamacare. NYC made it's bed, now they can lie in it.

I understand the intent, however I completely disagree with the principle. Do I think we, as a nation(USA), Yes, but I do not think the government should have to or even be able to tell people that they can no longer drink however much they want. As KingHorse said this is just impinging on ones freedom.

    I live in New York!

I think it will make zero difference, weight loss isn't about what the public let's you do, it's about wanting to lose weight yourself.

I don't drink sugary drinks myself so it doesn't affect me in the slightest.

It's a bit ridiculous that something like this gets a pass and I don't think that it'll work, but I can see why they might deem it necessary. 16 ounces is a helluva lot of sugary goodness. Where I live it's pretty much unthinkable that anybody would drink more than that to a meal.

And it is indeed a subconsciously thing like somebody here already mentioned: If people have to stop and think to get a second one, they might not do it.

There do exist studies on people and the XXL menus showing that if offered large menus and drinks people subconsciously tend to eat more than they originally intended to. Manners and upbringing teach us that we should eat up and not waste food, and when it's already sitting in front of us ... who are we to decline it...? Plus we tend to underestimate the size of a meal. It's a slippery slope ... you slowly eat and drink your way upwards, always getting a bit more. And suddenly you're at those XXL menus that don't even exist in other countries. I'd really like to link to that study, but I was merely remembering it from like 5 years ago...

I'm often terrified of the sheer menu sizes that exist in the USA - not that I want to tell people what to do. I mean that I simply can't imagine that people are actually physically able to eat all that. I never-ever see anybody eat menus that big around here where I live, not even obese people. So I'm always left wondering: How the hell is this possible? Where is it all going? I'd be keeling over from so much food, yet apparently this is advertised as being completely normal.

    P.S.:

Would be really interesting to see more comparisons like this (and from a serious source). But I'd really like to see these kind of things in a bigger perspective.

Sugary drinks are horribly unhealthy and so, I think restricting it is a good thing. But I don't think it will have much effect.

Too bad you guys couldn't get those stricter federal laws for nutrition in the school cafeterias passed. I think it would be very useful to get kids from a young age to get a proper mix of meat and vegetables in their diet, and not so much french fries and pizza. Btw, do you have cooking in school? We had some classes where we learned about nutrition and basic cooking, and I think that helped us being aware of what to eat, and showed us that making a healthy, tasty meal is easy. Home made most things > mcdonalds, KFC etc. in taste, cost and nutrition.
    Mother pus bucket!
