    Puberty

So, puberty topic wassup. So I'm 19, kind of a late bloomer or w/e you would call it. JUST starting to get a beard, at least I think I am. Got a question for you older gents...

How did your beard start growing in when it started? Did it come in uniform at first? Or was it just random hairs popping up in no particular order? Cuz right now, I'm just starting to get that creepy pedostache ya gotta shave every so often, and am also just getting random black bristles on mah face. Sound about right? lol

That's like me, random hairs just started popping up and then the chin-stache came in, and then a while later a "proper" beard.

19 that's when I started to grow proper facial hair. 20-21 is when my chest hair seemed fully done. That pretty much came out of nowhere though, 19-20 barely any chest hair 20-21 ridiculous amounts of chest hair.

I'm 27 and I still think my facial hair looks like shit. It looked awful when I was 19 though. Plenty of a discernible pattern, but patchy enough that I shaved way more often than the longer spots would merit because the patches looked so stupid.

Mine came in really early. My beard started coming in around 14 and chest hair was not long after. It pretty much came in all at once. I noticed that my face was starting to have a rough feeling to it and then it started coming in. Once you shave it the first time it will start growing back at a much faster rate.

Yeah the chest hair is starting up too. It's weird though, the peach fuzz is stepping aside on the stomach area and got pretty dark and longer. It's uniform throughout though. But then the soul patch is just dark longer hairs haha. Puberty is a weird thing man!

I think mine started coming in when I was about 14. It was in small random spots but within about a year (by the time I was in 9th grade) I started needing to shave every few days. Keeping it in a goatee right now. The rest is a daily shave and a trim with electric clippers once a week to maintain the sleekness. I know a lot of people who started out in small patches and stuff, may be the "norm" thing.

    That's a myth.

I've never grown much facial hair, and when I did, it didn't start til 25? Even then it's barely noticeable.

chest hair first since like age 12, then i got a small stubble beard now at age 20.

My beard swirls around my jawline like my father's (so I'm told), its a bitch to shave, but it looks worse unshaven since it doesn't grow beyond that.

I have an Indian friend from my school days who started getting stubble at the age of 12. At age 19 he looked more masculine than some of the 30 year old+ male teachers.

It depends on your genes, really. Many guys can't grow a proper beard. For me, I started shaving when I was 13. I hit puberty early. It started as random whisker-like hairs on my chin and gradually got more dense. I still don't have enough follicles on my face to grow a uniform beard, though. And I'm now 33.

Confirmation bias at its best, really. People generally start shaving at the same time the facial hair starts kicking in. So as a teen, they find themselves shaving more and more. And their beard grows faster and faster. So they falsely believe that there's a causation with this correlation and each time they have to shave, confirms their bias. The reality is though, it is an illusion. Facial hair grows faster because they're developing through puberty and once this phase of development is over, facial hair grows as fast as it does and shaving has no effect on the speed of its growth whatsoever.

As the second poster above I started shaving at around 13. At that point it was just random hairs sticking out, but enough to make me look like a rabid fox. I was 16 when I had enough growth for my first goatee, it was pretty scanty to say the least. If we're talking a proper beard, hobo style, I was 19 or perhaps even 20 when that happened. I just woke up one morning and there it was, a wild hobo beard. I'm serious, it snuck up on me during the night without any warning at all.

Even though I have a thick and consistent beard doesn't mean it's a good beard. My beard is a freaking crow's nest, absolutely horrible to maintain with daily trimming and even combing. I reckon I put around 3-4 hours/week on my beard and then I'm just trying to avoid looking like a bum. If I try something like a full beard we're looking at twice those hours in maintenance alone. Not fun times!

The only positive thing I get from my beard growth is the ability to twist it into small little "rods" that I can then suckle on when playing video games. xD

I have gotten a little more hair each year, and am starting to see a patch of chest hair coming in.

I think it's pretty normal to get the mustache first, it's what happened with me and is happening to my brother, just shave it off untill the rest of the beard starts showing up. Oh and my brother is 12, I was around his age aswell, the rest of the beard started showing up soon after, granted, like the moustache it still wasn't thick at all at that time.

I'm 18. If I don't shave I get a lovely neckbeard... I also get chops, but not much in the rest of my face >.<

Enjoy it while it lasts. If I don't shave everyday, I look like an unevolved primape.

And I'm ginger. Having a big red afro and matching beard hardly rocks anyone's world.

I have to take care of it at least once every two days for it to not look like shit. It's patchy as hell on my right cheek.

Good think that I'm able to grow a full neckbeard though.

    /sarcasm
