According to partpicker, an AMD FirePro V9800 will set you back 2.8 grand.

    A V7900 is "only" 680 dollars

Don't know about the relative power of those cards though. I'm sure that Cyan knows a lot more about it than I do.

Not at all... At best it's slightly behind a regular 7970, at its worst it is beaten by $180~ midrange cards. It's just a 7970 with 6GB of VRAM and different drivers (like all other workstation cards). Tom's Hardware did a huge review of workstation cards for gaming a week or so ago:

With a price tag of $3,400, it would be a waste of money unless you're using it for professional uses.

really hard figuering out what Nvidia is going to do next. I am not a huge fan of the Titan and Titan SE story and I don't know what to expect of 7XX. Probably gonna wait til maxwell (8XX?) is out.

It's the WS-version of the 7970, and performs similarly. Just thought you needed to hear it a couple more times. :P

I know what it is. Just think it's a bit funny that considering how little margin of error these cards have and their not optimized for games drivers, they still manage to produce so good results in gaming.

But it is the 7970 chip on a different board. All you can conclude is that the drivers probably are not so different really, and that the ECC memory isn't much of a bottleneck.
