the English language was designed terribly. there is so many rules to the languages but then there are exceptions to those rules, exceptions to those exceptions.
SUGAR wtf why is it spelled like that.

HAKUNA MATATA... IT MEANS NO WORRIES FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAYS
"Oh, wretched ephemeral race, children of chance and misery, why do you compel me to tell you what it would be more expedient for you not to hear? What is best of all is utterly beyond your reach; not to be born, not to be, to be nothing. But the second best for you is --- to die soon." Silenus
It wasn't designed, that's the whole problem.
It evolved out of a mix of a number of languages.

Can you clarify designed for me? Not sure what makes you think it was "designed." Now a language ilke Japanese seems quite designed. But I think the sheer number of exceptions to the rules in English makes the case that they were added in later as rules.
Title was grammar designed terribly too

just my opinion obviously but if english isnt your native language and you cant speak it properly i dont really think that gives you any right to say its terrible or designed bad. obviously people are entitled to their opinions but when i see/hear someone saying how awful the english language is, and then they cant speak/write it properly, i would have a hard time taking any of their criticism to heart
It wasn't really designed.
As an aside, English is one of the easiest languages to communicate in, although mastering it can be difficult.
lol.. lots of "rules"?
..Don't even dare look at French grammar.
I had to look at this thread because of the thread title just to see the guy's argument. What makes up anything if there aren't any rules or standards?
Anyone who says English isn't a terrible and difficult language, most probably does not speak any other languages at all and most probably has never studied any either.
English is an amalgamation of multiple languages, so that may be why.
Yes, English might have a number of exceptions and unusual cases - such as the word read (looks the same, but depending on how you pronounce it, can mean either one of two slightly different things).
However, it seems comparatively simple to learn the basics of, but is difficult to be really good at.
So really - it's simple to learn, but hard to master.
I love me some English.

As has been noted by pretty much half the rest of the thread, the main reason English is such a mess is that it didn't get "designed" so much as it is the bastard offspring of old German, French, a bit of Greek and a smattering of Latin. When languages grow out of similar languages they can end up tangled as shit, when you have languages as different as French and German give rise to a mixed language, you are in for a goofy ass mess of rules.

English is actually lacking in rules compared to Spanish, my only issue is that it uses far too many borrowed words and thats one of the main resons why letter combinations sound differently when spoken which causes lots of problems for learners whose pronunciation is literal where o is oh and not oh ou au uh or any number of different sounds.
