Thread: Graphics Card

    Graphics Card

Building a new gaming PC, just wondering if a gtx 670 is overkill? Or would I just be better off getting a 660 and save myself 200$? Here's the rest of my build:

    Case: COOLER MASTER Storm Stryker
    Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Power Supply: Corsair TX Series 650W
    CPU: i5-3570k Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz
    SSD: Samsung 840 250GB
    RAM: S.SKILL Ares Series 16GB
    Hard drive: WD 1TB
CPU Cooler: COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO

Any feedback on the Graphics card or any other parts would be great!

    Budget: $1500 or so
Games: WoW, GW2, D3, Fallout, other random new releases

660 is not that strong of a card, If you want to remain playing at highest settings for a couple of years then the 670 is the ideal choice.
I'm not sure what random new games mean, battlefield 4 perhaps? If you only buy random cheap games from the steam store then the 7870XT would be best.
660 is not really a great card, 650 ti boost isn't that far behind.

    Crysis 3 / Battlefield 4 / Metro Last Light & other sick new demanding releases = 670
Games you listed & random steam games = 7870XT
    8700K (5GHz) - Z370 M5 - Mugen 5 - 16GB Tridentz 3200MHz - GTX 1070Ti Strix - NZXT S340E - Dell 24' 1440p (165Hz)

I'm not gonna go so far as saying a 660 is not a strong card like Toffie, it's still a pretty good card, but if the budget allows go for the 670. You won't regret it. Any higher and you probably will, there have been a couple people here that bought 680s and wished they had gone with the 670, but everyone I know of that went with a 670 was happy with their purchase.

The 660 is a good card for the games listed, but the 650 ti boost is cheaper and not more than 4 % worse. I guess thats what I meant xD

I would see if you can get a 7870ghz it is the best budget card (imo). It's cheaper then a 670 and about as good and its better then a 660 for sure. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127722 something like that is what I would suggest. If you are wanting to stay with Nvidia then I would suggest a 660ti msi, gigabyte, and asus is the brands I suggest on video cards.

EDIT: I don't know what I'm thinking guess it's to early anyways the 7870 tahiti le is what I would suggest http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131484 something like that I don't know why I was thinking of ghz edition.

Here is what I would go with, keeping well within budget:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

    CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($219.98 @ Outlet PC)
CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE_BK 78.1 CFM CPU Cooler ($79.99 @ Newegg)
    Motherboard: MSI Z77A-GD55 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($125.98 @ SuperBiiz)
    Memory: Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($47.98 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($162.99 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($66.98 @ Outlet PC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 670 2GB Video Card ($369.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling Silencer MK III 600W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($79.99 @ Newegg)
    Total: $1223.87
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

    1) The cooler I put in the build for you is a goodly amount better than the EVO.
    2) 16GB RAM is not needed for a gaming rig. 8GB is plenty, and since RAM has raised in price quite a bit recently, there is no reason to get 16, unless you are doing rendering work, video editing, etc on a DAILY BASIS.
    3) GTX 670 is well in the budget, so I put one in.
    4) The case you had selected is... overpriced. I would go with a nice midtower like the one I have here for you. There are many other choices that would fit in your budget as well that would be a bit nicer.
    5) Why not spend $5 more to get a semi-modular psu? There are other choices around your price range, or you could step up and get fully modular if you wanted.
    6) There is nearly $300 left over from your $1500 budget. This will afford you the luxury of new peripherals if you need them.

Phantek CPU cooler for 80$ when you can get the NH-D14 for the same, or even less, and it's better? I am saddened.

Also, this 750W corsair (which is awesome by the way) is both cheaper, and a more reliable brand:

I'd suggest saving money and get the XFX550W instead, it's much cheaper and is more than enough for that system.

That's true, but was just making my mandatory statement.

As for the Phanteks, yes. It is quite a bit better than the 212EVO. It is on the same level as the Noctua D14. It also can be color coordinated with the system.

PCPower and Cooling is just as reliable AND semi-modular. There is 0 reason to go non-modular within the OPs budget.

Agree, non-modular PSU's is crap to work with, would spend extra to get a modular.
