    New WIFI standard - 802.11ac

    Hello all,

I was wondering if any of you have gotten routers or NIC with 802.11ac yet? I'm currently considering buying a router and an USB nic for my workstation.

How are it performing when transferring large files to NAS etc?

    Thanks.

    Z.

    802.11ac is specc'd for 1Gbps

most of the USB ac adapters are USB 2.0

USB 2.0 is max 480 Mbps

1gbps is only reachable with AC if you use MIMO (not happening in USB), or extremely large bandwidths (like 160mhz).

On top of that, you still require considerably more power for the QAM256 modulation needed for its theoretical maximum. Finally, AC is a 5ghz standard - which like WiFi A and N very quickly loses signal power over range and through objects.

With a USB stick, I'd expect the range to be so short it would be meaningless not to draw a cable in the first place.
