This all happened about 13-14 years ago, back when I was still living in Pakistan. I was about 14 years old back then and my family's financial situation was horrifyingly bad. I won't go into the details but lets just say that our life was a pain in the ass back then. I didn't even go to school, instead I just looked for work wherever I could find it.
One day, a Korean cargo boat docked at a local port. I didn't pay much attention to them at first but then I found out that they were paying local boys to capture any stray dogs that they could find. Our neighborhood was infested with stray dogs so this was an opportunity to make some serious money. They were paying 500 rupees per dog (I think that was around $15 Canadian dollars back then). $15 may not seem like much but for someone in my situation, it was ALOT. It was about what my dad made in a month.
So me and a couple of friends got together and hunted down any dogs we could find. We almost got bit a couple of times but we took special precautions to protect ourselves. There was alot of competition and some days, we couldn't get any dogs at all. There were hundreds of people out on the streets doing exactly what we were doing. Within a few weeks, the local dog population basically went extinct. Me and my friends ended up catching around 7 dogs. Even after we split up the profits, we still made some serious money. I can tell you that it made my family's life far more convenient for a few months. We could finally afford electricity, clean water, medication and some actual food.
I guess I should mention that my family is no longer living in poverty (mostly thanks to the efforts of my older brother). We're living a comfortable life in Canada atm. The reason I am bringing this story up is that I recently had a conversation with one my friends about this topic. It just came out of nowhere, I randomly blurted out that I used to sell live dogs to a bunch of Koreans so they could eat them. All of a sudden, he started calling me a monster. I tried explaining to him that I did it for financial reasons but he said there was absolutely no excuse for doing what I did.
So I'm curious to see what the rest of you think. I always used to think that my actions were justified but now I am not so sure. I've definitely noticed that here in Canada, people tend to have a much different attitude towards dogs.
