[Megathread] Hex - MMO TCG - Alpha starting Oct 8th

Since we don't seem to have a thread about Hex, the kickstarter is ending today (over $2million raised on a $300k goal) I figured I'd start a thread and see who's going to be playing and what you guys think of it - the beta should be here by September.

So here's some information about it:

From the team that brings you the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, HEX is a free-to-play game that combines the compelling collectible and strategic game play of a trading card game (TCG) with the amazing community and storytelling aspects of a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) to create an entirely new gaming experience: the MMO/TCG. .
    Official Website: www.hextcg.com

Here are some of the core features -

    • 6 classes, 8 races with their own storylines and talent trees.
    • Over 350 starter cards with new cards being added approximately 3x per year.
    • Add equipment and item sets to cards.
    • Add gems into socketable cards.
    • Double back - allows you to upgrade cards with experience, using them to win tournaments, and completing achievements.
    • PvE campaigns - including dungeons and raids for group play vs AI and factions with quest rewards. You can earn PvE cards this way.
    • PvP play - including friendly PvP with friends up to serious tournament play.
    • Official PvP tournaments organised - described as "dozens of daily tournaments, on demand 8-player drafts and real cash prizes."
    • Guilds, including guild card banks and guild tournaments.
    • A player economy - trading and auction house.
    • Game is free to play - with all accounts getting 1 starter deck for free.
    • Additional starter decks currently suggested price of around $10 (starter decks at this price are not tradeable, they are just a pre-made set to get you started so you can complete the content to earn more cards) , and booster packs at $2, with cards earnable in game also through both pve and pvp content.

Here's a video of an actual game in pre-alpha.

If anyone hasn't backed but wants access, they're keeping open a pre-order at http://hextcg.com/donate, there's only one tier of $50 (which is how much 25 sets of booster packs will cost so the rest is essentially free) and it includes

    • HEX MMO TCG alpha invite as a special thank you for contributing.
    • 1 Starter Deck (in addition to your free Starter Deck at account creation)
    • 25 Set 1 Booster Packs
    • 2 months of VIP Program (1 pack per week, access to an exclusive tournament and deck tools)

I'll be creating a guild on Hex and if you're interested in an MMOC guild I'm hoping we can get a bunch of people from this section together for some dungeons and raids. I have the Guild bonuses from the Kickstarter campaign - meaning everyone in the guild gets +10% PvE Exp for life and I'm hoping to keep an active amount of guild tournaments. This is a discussion thread not a guild recruitment thread or anything but if you're interested in that, leave your name and I'll keep you updated.

Alpha now confirmed for October 8th

I'm playing at Collector. I play a couple of CCGs in real life, except I don't own any cards for them, just attend tournaments borrowing decks. Nobody in my awful small town plays anything like CCGs or board games. So I'm psyched that a good company are making what looks like the correct way to do online CCGs (most of the F2P digital CCGs are horrific, and MTGO has the worst client EU).

Was hoping to back it, but didn't get money in time

Hope I can get into the beta at least.

I used to be an avid MTG player, which is often one of the inspirators for games such as these. But so far, only Magic, is Magic. All other cardgames simply never reach the depth that is required, or the amount of players/card combinations to be succesful. I would like to say that I'm positively going to play this, but the truth is, I will probably be disappointed once more (even after watching the interview on Angry Joe).

I don't understand why Wizards haven't yet released an actual online only game (without client) with full access to the entire collection, all series, based on the current pricing and releases and create a complete virtual MTG world. I have loads of cards still, some stored in plastic, as they are quite rare, some in default card albums, most in boxes, and I really can't seem to find any suitable replacement.

This game too, only seems to add gimmicks to the cards, rather than to the gameplay. MTG was complex. Really complex. There's a reason why most current cardgames stay away from Interrupts (play only during enemy turn) and Instants (play during both turns), they're insane to program for. Hex seems to want to exploit the RPG element more, which is exactly the thing card games do not need. Just look at Urban Rivalz. "Leveling" your cards because they're worthless otherwise. Such a time-sink, for nothing.

I know and truly believe that the maker of Hex is actually very passionate about cardgames, but... [it's] not Magic.

    - Edit - to be fair;

All elements that made MTG good seem to be in it and they really know how to get it right visually, I'm just wondering about the 'other' features. Only 350 cards is also relatively low for a strategic/tactical TCG. 350 cards are the numbers for a single release of a series in MGT.

I'm on the fence really. I want to support it, but at the same time, I feel I shouldn't -_-

It's also only one set at the moment. MAgic has developed over what, close to 20 years? There's always room for growth, but a game can't add needless complexity to the very first set. You need to establish a base level first.

I think that's the problem a lot of newer strategy card games face, the constant comparisons to what magic the gathering is now - but magic has had decades to build on what it has and there's just no way for any game to put out the same number of cards at once, and I mean, I'd rather start with a small set that is well balanced and varied and have regular updates.

I've been playing TCGs for most of my life and I really want to give this a shot. When I was younger I flew around to places and played in competitive events but now I just can't swing that. The notion of guild support and co-op play is what really got my attention here. That's flippin' cool -- and I would absolutely join an MMO-Champ guild. This seems like the kind of thing that would be an absolute blast with friends.

Currently playing Borderlands 1 remaster. Amped for Borderlands 3.

That's just a silly argument. It's the same as saying you can wear pvp gear in pve in WoW. And in this case both are [probably] seperated to some degree. Don'tget me wrong, I'm not trashing the game, at all. It's the closest to the "real" thing and does a splendid job at bringing it to the table.

    Congratulations!

I'm going to hold most of my judgement for when I can see what the raid/dungeon stuff is going to be like, but the gameplay video reminded me of a green saproling deck vs a red goblin deck in MTG: DotP 2013.

Hi ! I´m might be intrested in joining that guild once beta is out ( donated in kickstarter for warrior tier by the way ) so keep me updated !

And I have some questions about multiplayer in pve. Will for example, 3 players be able to play together against 3 AI- opponents ? If they do, will they be able to buff each others cards and enchant them and work together with them etc ? It´s fine if you dont know the awnsers, but if you do you could tell me.

Sorry for eventuall spelling errors, english is not my native language.

I don't think they've said in details, I found this on the website

"A:You can expect modes other then 1v1 in the PvE space. Raids are 3v1 and there are several dungeons that mess around with # players on both sides in crazy ways. You get cards for completing quests as well as defeating special enemies. Finally, that can drop from treasure chests, etc. "

There was a 40 minute interview with some pre-alpha gameplay at E3 the gamespot booth at E3 today, someone recorded it through a twitch stream here

This is probably a stupid question, but do you know when the alpha starts? I'm pretty excited for this, but I couldn't find info about that anywhere.

He said in the stream that beta would start in September, with the alpha starting " a few weeks" before that, and that kickstarter backers (and slacker backers) would be the only ones with the access to the alpha - and could reserve names and guild names then. He also said he and the staff would be actively playing games with random people through the alpha.

I assume, since he made a point of stating that alpha was for kickstarters only, that they do intend for the beta to be open to random invites from non kickstarter peeps as well... although they haven't specifically said.

So yeah, most likely mid-late August or early September for Alpha
