Dark Rum goes well with cola, if it is top shelf it could be suitable on the rocks.

Never use a mixer with a decent Scotch - such as the Talisker. A little water, or ice, or drink it straight.

Pedantic note: whisky is Scottish, whiskey is Irish.

Not at all imo. Oaked alcohol is horrible.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Put the neck of the bottle inside your anus, and drink it like the real men do.

The farther you get down the bottle, the less you notice the taste

Single malts often have a strong/powerful taste, some like it and some don't, but you will get more accustomed to it the more you drink (the same as with anything really).

Also, sip it, don't gulp it down.

for how many years have you been drinking? to me it tastes like my first hangover haha. maybe i'm just not meant to drink it, or maybe it gets better with time.

As with any single malt/highland/islay, a little bit of fresh cold water will help enhance it, never ice. But other than water don't add anything to a single malt, it's not bourbon, rye or "whiskey" that you just throw come cola into it.

Dark rum...nothing quite beats a Dark n' Stormy. 1 part Dark Rum, 3 parts Ginger Beer over ice. Add a squeeze of lime if you have some available. Ginger Ale works too, but that's better with spiced rum.

What do you normally drink, how old are you, and have you eaten anything recently?

I remember drinking this a few years ago at a rock festival, nearly threw up.

haven't eaten anything today really (clock is 18.32, i slept until 14.30), and i'm turning 21 in september. i normally drink jägermeister or xider, or standard beer so this is a big step for me haha.

My taste for single malts didn't really develop until my mid 20s. Before that, I went for the bottom of the barrel type stuff and drank it just to get smashed. Now I'll have a glass every day after work just as a beverage to enjoy. It's not something for everyone though, and definitely an acquired taste.

You shouldn't be that shocked by the taste, considering your usual drinks, and the time indicates that you're European, so probably used to alcohol by your age.

I'd recommend to have a meal first, let that settle, and have the whisky after. Having it 'cold' may be a bit of a shock to your body, perhaps have one beer or one glass of wine with your meal as well to get a bit of alcohol in your system - don't mix too much, or you will suffer.

Stuff like Talisker isn't really a 'get pissed' sort of drink, it's more of a chill out and kick back type.

Put 1 ice cube in a whisky glass, pour directly onto the ice cube. Stir or twice. Let it sit for a few minutes and try again. Basically, letting it "breathe" like with a wine. It'll smooth out a bit.

Also, good whisky is meant to be sipped. Even if it is a very powerful flavor.

And for the rum... there should be a great many mixed drink recipes out there. It'll tend to pair well with citrus and various fresh herbs (mint and basil come to mind). Always remember to muddle your herbs.

Let's all ride the Gish gallop.
