I quite like the new changes to be honest, almost there.
Couple more and we could potentially be the top couple of melee for once this expansion.

•Sacred Shield (Old) has been renamed to Holy Shield and is no longer a talent. Holy Shield is a Protection Paladin ability learned at level 85.
On the Ptr Ret currently has access to the Holy Shield ability. Now while that might be a bug I really think that it needs to be baseline for us as well. Given our state of personal survivability we seriously need something and from what I have tested on the Ptr Holy Shield does a very good job of that.
Hopefully they will decide to let us keep it.

From how I understood the blues, the Sacred Shield that gives a 30 second buff for an absorb every 6 seconds is being renamed to Holy Shield and given to Prot baseline, and will likely be nerfed since Prot Paladins will be able to get a talent on top of it.
They wanted to give the new Sacred Shield (Cata's Retribution Sacred Shield) to prot, but scrapped it, and are looking at making it more desirable for ret/holy while making selfless healer/eternal flame more desirable for prot.
My noob sense is tingling.
Rets do good damage only during wings, which is the perfect time for sheep, fear, disarm, ring of peace, stun, etc, etc, etc. Then it's back to hitting like a little girl. On my ww monk I have 0 issues with rets.
If you think rets are OP then you need more l2p lessons.
They already gave Prot the Holy Shield (Sacred Shield talent on live) ability baseline but apparently didn't like the change. What they were saying is that if they kept that change they would probably have to nerf prot in some other way so them getting "Holy Shield" on top of the Cata Sacred Shield talent wouldn't make them stronger than they are now.
One can only hope that if they remove the (Cata) Sacred Shield as a talent and replace it with the old one it will be given to Ret baseline.
I really doubt they will, for PVE reason for once.
They deleted/reduced every passive damage reduction class had for 5.4 (lock, SP, boomkin, hunter passives -X% damage). I don't think they will give us a permanent absorb shield. And with the 30s CD Divine protection we may don't really need it.
Holy Shield or the "current" Sacred Shield is not passive. But it's a moot point seeing as how they are reverting the change anyway.
Ret is one of the weakest spec's in terms of survivability in PvP. The "change" to Unbreakable Spirit isn't really much different than live. It's just more simplified.

It's not really the same as the old SS.
Used to also increase healing by 15% while it was active.
I feel like they should also include that.. Then it'd be a good talent.
i think ret would be a better spec if you had a ton of survivability but lesser sustained damage to balance it. i mean paladins seem like the class that can take a lot of damage
That's true. It will be interesting to see what they do with it. I hope they also address our survivability as well before the patch goes live.

Ret's sustained is already very low. I think you mean Burst. But even then Ret burst (while strong) is definitely not the strongest of every class.
Aren't we missing here that the Guardian of Ancient kings can no longer stack past 12 or 13 % ? That is 2 minutes off the cooldown in exchange for 7-8% less burst damage.
No we already covered this, yes 40% off the CD and 40% off STR stacks breaks us about even, however ever since MoP launched the guardian's personal melee damage is actually very high, and this damage was not nerfed as far as we know. So, yes we do lose burst, but the increase in sustained really is quite significant.
