I find it amusing that you think that dividing by north and south is going to give you a happier population, the major flaw i see in your plan is the number of parties and or people that align themselves with either Liberal or Conservative parties yet have there own motivation and ideals within them. So in the end you would end up solving this by splitting the north into east and west?

A bad idea for several reasons, not the least of which being how much of a pain it would be to decide who gets the swing states, revamping the highway system, and the fact that the North has much of the industry still, while the South has most of the food. Neither North nor South would be functional independently.

Careful when talking about Europe though, has liberalism there is more associated with the right.

A lot of the burden would be lifted off northern states if the southern ones were gone. That is because the northern states are richer and subsidize the southern, poor and mostly red states. You would think, given that conservatives and Republicans like to tout their 'job creation' policies, that people in those states would be richer in terms of purchasing power. Instead it's the opposite, and they need more federal spending to help their poor people.
