Society is always pushing and rewarding people to achieve mainly for its own gain. From the second that you are born this cloud is set over your head telling you to gain great status, wealth, and power. Then after you have accomplished that you should give back by building massive skyscrapers, homes, parks, or anything to improve a society. It is a greedy entity, and doesn't care about your personal happiness. It just wants to use you up for it's own gain.

As far as I can tell this is all an illusion anyways. In reality society doesn't owe you anything, but you don't owe it anything either. So why do so many people give a shit about society at all?

Not really. A society has a structure. Obviously we should do things to support this structure. "Building skyscrapers" is one way of doing it. If you are not contributing, then you are not good for society. And I don't mean people on welfare either, they contribute in many ways. We all get something out of it, as long as we put something into it.

This "illusion" your convinced of is just that, an illusion. It's an excuse to be lazy. To not care about society. To give yourself cause to not contribute when in reality society has given you numerous advantages. The clean water you drink, the clean food you eat, the secured borders you live in. All this because we as a society have come together to achieve something. If you don't like or want it, there are many other countries that have no society what so ever for you to enjoy.

You benefit from society, everyone benefits from society. Somewhere along the way you benefited from a service or infrastructure that society provided. You are not supposed to be a greedy sob, you are supposed to be pay it back so the next generation can benefit, and so on.

We could say the same exact thing thing about genes. Except that when it comes to give back, genes demand that we have tons of children. Genes are greedy, they only care about their own diffusion and replication, not about our happiness.
Why should we bother accepting their demands? (drives like sex, selfishness, agression, absurd attraction patterns...)

Regarding society, it's something called the social contract. If you think you owe nothing to society, just try to imagine what is like living outside of society.

There are many places where society has broken down enough that you can consider it irrelevant and live freely there. Some are nicer than others.

We individuals, as a whole, function as a society, stop being a Holden Caulfield and realize that if you want to do what makes you happy then you should go for it. Money is required to live and brings happiness, but abstract emotions such as love can also bring about happiness.

Society is a construct designed by humans. That push for people to gain status, wealth, and power and reinvest it into the community is in part the government, trying to subtly manipulate people into being useful citizens (is that even a bad thing?) as well as people's influence on each other, in that our need for attention and short-term gratification causes us to pursue wealth, status, and power.

Peers might say "just be yourself" and "do what you want to do!" but always have something in mind when they say that, within their own little box of reality. We are subtly pushed into a mold by everyone we come in contact with. You can ignore it, accept it, or fight it.
