Need some help deciding between a 120hz and 60hz monitor.

    Long story short.

I've got about 500 bucks to spend on a monitor. Not saying I WANT to necessarily spend that much on a monitor, but I wouldn't MIND spending up to that much if the monitor was deemed worthy.

Currently, I play A LOT of CS:GO. It's pretty much the ONLY game I play. That is going to 180 when the Xbox One/PS4 drop. I plan on gaming on consoles 95% of the time, and 5% of the time I'll spend messing around in CS:GO when I'm bored and none of my friends are online.

Do I buy a 120hz monitor such as the Asus, which actually offers 144hz, or do I purchase a really good 60hz monitor? This is the way I see the pros and cons of purchasing the 120hz monitor.

    120/144HZ PROS
    - If I ever decide to PC game again in the future, I'll already have a good monitor for it and won't need to worry about purchasing again.
    - The times that I WILL PC game (CS:GO), I'll have a good monitor in the games that I currently play.
    - No huge price difference between a good 60hz monitor and the 120/144hz monitors (BenQ and Asus is the 2 I'm looking at)
    120/144HZ CONS
    - If I decide to never PC game again in the future, I'll have a monitor that's not using its full potential.
    - I cancel out all PC gaming while I have the Xbox One/PS4, once again having a monitor that I can't use to its full potential.
    - If I decide to PC game again in the future (3-5 years), I'll have to buy a more powerful graphics card, as well, to be able to run the newer games at 120+fps to take advantage of the high refresh rate.

How is the quality of the 120hz monitors if I'm only console gaming on them @ 60hz? Is it comparable to good 60hz monitors that I could have bought for the same price?

If you had $500 dollars to blow and you were in my situation (switching to console games when the new gen drops with a possibility of returning to a game like WoW), what would YOU purchase?

I'm just trying to get some other opinions here. Thanks in advance!

also, if I DO happen to get a 60hz monitor, I would like something in the 25,26,27,28 inch range if that's possible. Biggest possible view with the best performance.

Eh, the quality doesn't change. There is no difference watching something at 60fps on a 120Hz vs a 60Hz.

You want to aim for 23-24" @1080p or 27" @1440p for the best picture quality. 1440p being a lot more expensive. 120/144Hz monitor is really only good if you have a system powerful enough to drive higher FPS, like 90+. If you're running at 60 and below it's wasted money basically. If you're able tun high FPS then yes 120Hz does look a lot smoother.

If you want something that looks better overall, like watching movies, playing variety of games etc. then I'd recommend an IPS monitor, IPS monitor will offer the best image as it has more accurate and better quality colors along with excellent viewing angles. here are some examples of good IPS monitors:

    Asus PA248Q ~$300 || Review
    HP ZR2440w ~$370 || Review

    Asus PB278Q $550 || Review 1 || Review 2

i was under the impression that 120hz monitors were released with the 3d glasses technology in mind as it runs the image in two parts at 60hz per.

you answer your question with this sentance, Instead of investing upto $500 on a Monitor you will only use 5% of the time, get yourself a decent 60hz monitor, and invest the rest in either your console games, or towards Large screen TV, or a cinema surround system. There is no use imo getting yourself a 120hz monitor if you will not get the full benefit of it long term.

    I didn't mention 3D because it's a gimmick at best.

I don't see how viewing angles is an argument, when you normaly put the screen right infront.
    Case: Corsair 750D MB: ASUS Sabertooth Z170 MARK1 CPU: i7 6700K (4.7GHz) CPU Cooling: Corsair H115i
PSU: EVGA Supernova P2 750W Platinum GPU: EVGA GTX 980 Ti Classified 6GB SSD1: 256GB Samsung 840 Pro
    SSD2: 1TB Samsung 850 Pro RAM: Corsair 32GB DOMINATOR Monitor: Asus 27" VG278H 120Hz

Get a nice 23-24 IPS monitor.
There wont be any console games running higher than 60 fps which makes the faster refresh useless.
    8700K (5GHz) - Z370 M5 - Mugen 5 - 16GB Tridentz 3200MHz - GTX 1070Ti Strix - NZXT S340E - Dell 24' 1440p (165Hz)

Ever watched a movie/show on your PC while not sitting directly in front?

Ever had multiple screens in your setup?

Ever had more than one person watching the screen at the same time?

Well, I have and it makes a big difference.

Maybe you can buy a 120hz and sell it to buy a 60hz when you don't play CS:GO anymore?

Can someone explain me correctly why I should get a 27inch 1440 instead of a 27inch 1080p monitor?

Im considering buying a 27inch 1080p monitor and iv read several times that its better to get a 27inch in 1440p. Is it really that bad to get a 27inch 1080p screen?

EDIT: Reason im asking because I used to play on my 1080p 42inch TV and dont really notice any difference in quality between that and my 24lcd monitor except that I had to sit a little bit further away as it was a huge screen

2nd EDIT: Sorry dont want to hijack the thread, just didnt want to create a new one and need 1 simple amswer ;p

This is kind of a silly question. The 1440P is going to have a much better picture, but that's only if you have the computer to drive it. Given an optimal computer setup, you wil definitely notice a drastic improvement in the picture from 1080 to 1440. It's realistically about 33% more pixels / inch compared to a 1080 at the same size.

    Hey guys!

Thanks for the replies. One question, though.

Wouldn't getting a 1440p monitor be pointless for consoles, considering the consoles will only go up to 60hz/1080p? Or will the 1440p monitors have a better picture when it's set to 1080p than a true 1080p monitor would?

Depends if the monitor runs at 120Hz or not when connecting a console. On my PC I notice it clearly the quality difference and especially the brightness boost.

I own an ASUS VG278HE. It's 144hz and games look so beautiful and fluid with it. Very happy with this purchase.

Yes it would be pretty pointless.

I own the 24 version, it's pretty stunning considering it's faster refresh rate compared to other 120hz+ screens.

120 Hz monitor is always 120 Hz monitor no matter If you play games on 5,30,40,60,90,120,2000 FPS..... It will always refresh the screen with 120 Hz and FPS made by PC doesn't matter here.

    PROS of 120 Hz monitor:
    - Everything is smooth and sexy! that means You enjoy games even MORE!
    - Eyes don't hurt like on 60 Hz. I feel the difference maybe I'm from MARS h3h3.

    CONS:
    - What?

You shouldn't listen to people who say "If You don't have ultra rocket gaming rig then you won't use its full potential" - that's bullcrap.

I tested my friends 120 Hz monitor and I feel big difference that's why I'm going to buy my own soon.

To those who say "You need 120 FPS to see 120 FPS" tell me what's the issue for You when You play a game with 60-80 FPS on 120 Hz monitor? I'm really curious.

Well I understand when You have 30 FPS then game lags and You feel that for example by turning camera around and I see big lines and image stuttering so hard and everything is "sharp" on 60 Hz monitor.

On 120 Hz I found that the image is a lot smoother even If FPS drops.

you'll feel lag like input lag on 60 fps on 120 Hz ask ppl that have its noticeable.. and put ips/pls monitor and 120 Hz monitor beside him and it will look like total crap .. because its TN
