    Got a 1440p monitor coming, 770 vs 780...

So money's tight and I've already bought the 1440p monitor for $280 off ebay. I was going to go ahead and just get the 780, but I'm wondering if a 770 will be just as good and save me that extra ~$260 in cost. Money's tight, but I've been sitting on this freaking 560 for a few years now and it's time to upgrade it.

Games I mainly play are WoW obviously, Diablo 3, SC2, FF14 and maybe BF4 when it comes out (at least give it a shot as I've never played FPS games). I don't see any problem maxing out WoW/Diablo/SC2 with the monitor, it's FF14 I'm mainly worried about. BF4 I know for sure I'm not going to get 60fps with a 770 @ 1440p at max settings.

So should I just go with the 780 or stick with the 770 since it's still a huge upgrade over my 560 card I have now?

Was looking at this 770 here since I would also be getting ~$40 off for being an employee.

There's around 20-30% difference between the two cards at 1440p so it's not insignificant upgrade. If your motherboad and PSU can handle it the best value for money purchase would probably be getting one GTX770 now and add in another for SLI pair when you can afford it and if BF4 seems too slow.

I have no doubts my mobo/psu will handle 780 sli, well will be pushing it but it will do it, just that $650 price tag hurts a LOT.

I really need to upgarde it because while on the ptr during the Garrosh fight with all the spell effects, it REALLY strained my graphics a LOT. But that may be the cpu as well since I only have a i5-2500k overclocked at least.

I think when talking about CF, , CF 7950s gives the most bang for buck.
But yeah, I would either go with a SLI 770 or CF 7950/7970.
But out of experience, a single 7970 is enough to play just about everything on high/ultra settings with smooth gameplay (which for me is probably 40+ fps)

    Even @ 1440p Zeara?

So the general concensus is if I want to stay with nvidia, I should just get a 770 now and add a second in a couple weeks for SLI?

How much cheaper are 7970s though compared to 770s?

Is the microstuttering and broken frames fixed for all games already?

Not some showcase beta drivers that fixed five-ish games of AMD's choosing they've put out every few months?

Think I'll just stick with the 770s and SLI them in a couple weeks. One 770 should be fine for running WoW/FF14 at 2560x1440 with max settings you think?

Yeah, I got an 7970 @ stock @ 1440p and I can play just about everything at high/ultra settings. I havent tried Crysis3, but I guess it would struggle with that. But BF3 I play at max settings, Bioshock a mix of high/ultra I think. Biggest hit on performance I think is AA settings, and you can lower those because you play at an higher resolution

Im not sure, will have to look up some reviews of those drivers when I have some more time. But I think it is better at the moment than it was a while back

    edit:

It seems it is across the board better.

Nvidia stills seems to be a bit better, so that is probably still the better option for the OP (SLI 770s). But if you already have an AMD card, getting another is you best bet for the most performance gain (but that is a completely different topic ) Or if you dont have the budget to get say SLI 770, than CF 7970 is a solid option (or SLI 760/CF 7950, but you get my point I hope).

I wouldn't bother using AA at 1600p, just a waste imo.
Get a 7970 would be my suggestion.

Don't just SLI them in a couple weeks. Do it when you don't feel comfortable with the performance anymore. SLI'ing just for the sake of it makes no sense whatsoever.

If it's a couple weeks, I'd just wait and buy both at the same time. It doesn't hurt to try and get them binned together.

Well I don't know 100% if it'll be in a couple weeks. I'm just going to buy one now and go with it. Thanks.

    Pictures incoming lol.

So, I got the GTX770 and everything's great, but I'm just not seeing that much of an increase to be honest from the 560. I know WoW is more cpu intensive than gpu, but my cpu is fairly decent, i5-2500k @ 4.8. I'm getting ~50-59fps in Shrine and ~40-48fps in 25m raids and ~89-96 out in the world around zero people. This is with all settings turned up to ultra with multisampling at 1x and SSAO at high.

These are going to drop when my 1440p monitor gets here hopefully saturday aren't they? Or should that still be about the same and have little to no drop?

I doubt you even got close to those settings with the 560, I just wont believe it. 90-100 fps in open world & 40-48 fps in raids is just very good. You will notice about 20-25 % performance loss with the 1440p.

In open world for sure. Not in raids definitely though. Raids should see you pretty equal.

20-25% with 1440p? Really? Maybe I should just take this back and get the 7970 instead if they're a bit better than the 770s.

Only in open world. Other situations are CPU limited. Now, is your monitor 120/144 hz? If it isn't, you're not noticing FPS above 60 anyways so 20-25% performance decrease on the 80-85 you're getting won't be noticed.

Oh, remember to disable antialiasing, or just get it to 1x, when you get your 1440p monitor. It ain't needed on that high of a resolution anyways.

With how well Blizzard games go with Nvidia compared to AMD, a 780 is really your best option. Up to you if open world performance is worth the extra cost.
