Did you ever skip a grade?

Did you ever skip a grade when you were in school?

When I was kindergarten, I was identified as extremely intelligent and the school wanted me to skip several grades up to about 5th grade I think. There was just nothing to challenge me. My parents decided it was far too big of a jump and being around kids so much older than I was wouldn't be good for me, so they declined.

Instead, the school basically roped off a special selection of books in the library just for me. I was reading a level far above the rest of the kids.

I was probably going to be one of those kids that was 14 years old and in college already haha.

I was in all the extension classes which was basically like doing the work for that subject but at least a grade above the one I was in. There was mainstream --> high mainstream --> extension --> acceleration.

In first grade they wanted to hold me back because I never learned to sit still. By 5th grade they were asking to skip me ahead a grade or two. Instead I was given an 8th grade math book and told to go out into the hall and learn it. Never did move up and I was bored out of my mind until grad school.

I scored higher than another kid in my class who skipped grades. I just moved onto next grade... because I wasn't emotionally up to where "normal" kids should be because I wasn't very social (autism spectrum)

Literally the exact same thing happened to me, they decided I was too shy and decided to just throw me into gifted classes a year early. I was also fast-tracked for math and took AP Calc my freshman year of hs...and btw was not the only female in the class, two of my female classmates from that class are now in grad school in the sciences Apparently I'm the slacker in that group...

Well I started kindergarten when I was 4 years old and was a full year younger than everyone else up until high school. Does that count?

I always wanted to skip ahead, but my parents kept stopping me from doing so. Finally though I was able to convince them to let me take courses at the local community college at the end of my 10th grade year and during my 11th grade year in order to graduate a year early so if anything I skipped 12th grade.

i kinda skipped 7th. my mom got pissy with a teacher i had in 6th grade (it was my fault... i spent more time in iss than in any other part of the school in 6th grade...). so she stuck me in some kinda of private school for 7th and i didn't learn a goddamn thing while i was there.

I was moved up a grade on my english cram school(english isnt my native language obviously) because listening to english music watching movies and video games gave me an edge over the other kids ,in the end i ended up doing both grades and i got both the lower and the proffiecincy decree almost within six months.

Wait, OP, the school actually wanted to jump you by 5 years? Are they really that stupid?

Yay, a 4 year old should do just fine with 9-10 year olds!

Pretty much same for me except the current school I was at wanted to send me to a special "high education" private school and my parents didn't
agree with the new school's philosophy so they sent me to French Immersion instead. I think they made the right choice, 100%.

I started reading harry potter style books in 1st grade (6 years old) while my classmates were still struggling with the picture books. Needless to say I wasn't challenged ever in public school, or beyond.

They wanted to accelerate me twice when I was in school - first in kindergarten and then in primary school. My parents declined both times to keep me with my age group. When I was in elementary they put me in some AP classes - so that by the time I was in grade 10 I only had to go to school every other day, because I'd finished math/english/biology/chemistry.

It's definitely a mixed blessing - on the one hand I often wonder where I'd be if I was accelerated - because I spent most of my years in K->12 bored out of my skull: and that led to me goofing off and ignoring homework. I wasn't ignoring work because I wasn't a nerd, I very much was - I just ended up rebelling because everything was moving too slowly. So, not sufficiently challenging a kid can be a definite mistake - but I understand the desire to not put them out of their age group as well.

The most important lessons in K->12 are social lessons, accelerating people past that could make them socially inept savants (then again, that happens anyways to some people - so are we really in control of that?).

Skipping years in school is actually not that uncommon.
Even I had the possibility to skip the 1st grade (start in 2nd after kindergarten), and I'm not really intelligent. But my parents declined. Luckily, since in my village there are many awesome people of my age, most of them still my friends.
The highest amount of skipped classes I know of personally: A girl I went to high school with (for 2 years) skipped 3 years overall. She was a year younger, finished school a year earlier, because she lost one year due to health issues.
