Players would only use it for items that they couldn't sell on the AH at a profit over vendoring. And in that case, they'd more likely vendor it to have gold in their pocket.

Doubtful. There are plenty of people (like myself) that would put things in there. Quest items, outdated gear that won't sell, old gems, potions, etc...

I've got another idea for this.

What if every zone has such Free Box and that you need to dig it up with the Archeology profession. A bit like WoW's version of Geo-caching.
