    What is happeningggg :(

I bought a dell XPS series desktop about two summers ago. Good specs, and are as followed.

    460 Watt PSU
    16 GB DDR3
    i7 3770k
    NVIDIA GTX 650 TI
    Running Windows 7
    180 GB SSD with OS+WoW
2 TB 7200 RPM Seagate HDD

So if I'm listening to music and playing WoW/League at the same time my computer will like freeze for a brief second and the music will get staticy and my game will freeze for a second. My computer is more than capable of handling WoW and league but for some reason it'll just do that and it's enough to the point where it's annoying. At first I thought it was my speakers, so I set my headset as my primary sound input/output and it still happens. I don't have another PCI card for a sound card, but I don't even know if that's the issue. I have a factory sound card (The big grey box with the green, pink, grey, orange and blue slots, with a VGA port and all the USBs and I don't know if that's replacable). I brought it into Geek Squad already and did a RAM test and everything came back fine with no issues so any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Could be your HDD. atleast my 8 years old HDD likes to do this from time to time. unless your LoL and music is on the SSD

Sounds like your HD is spinning down and it takes a sec for it to spin up again and seek to get to your music.

Even if it's youtube music though?

That would depend if your browser is set to cache on the SSD or on the HDD.

    EDIT:

2 years is pretty early for a mechanical failure on an HDD though. They should hit 5 years old before they even start getting quirky. And I believe Dell uses Western Digital hard-drives, which are pretty damn reliable.

Does it still have all the crapware and trial software installed that Dell tends to bloat their systems up with?

Might be time for a fresh install of Windows from a proper M$ install disc.

This HDD is not even a month old, I upgraded it earlier.

Like somebody said it could be the HDD sleeping and waking up constantly. Since it's not the system drive the power settings are possible all out of whack.

Make sure it's not set to something stupid like "turn hard drives off after << 1 minute >> "

Where can I see something like that?

  10. #10
Control panel> Hardware and sound>power options>change plan settings>Change advanced power settings> hard disk

It's set to 20 minutes, maybe put it higher?

20 minutes should be more than adequate, so now we're looking for the problem again because that's been ruled out. :P

EDIT: Dell has a terrible habit of putting PSUs in computers that are "Just enough". So by having added the second hard-drive you might have inadvertently created a power supply deficiency. Although this would usually manifest itself as the computer not starting up at all.

So maybe upgrading the PSU? Because the GPU in it before was a Radeon 7770 so maybe this is why.

OP, if you could run a DXDiag, I'd like to be sure of what the specs are in your computer. 2 summers ago, the i7-3770K and 650 Ti were not at all available, so unless you mean last summer (2012), then your information is off a bit.

Also, DXDiag can help a bit with finding any problems.

Just hit your Start/Windows button and type dxdiag in the search box and run it. Paste the results here.

I added the 650 TI myself this year, same with the SSD and the HDD. And what results from Dxdiag do you want?

    All of it.

And two summers ago, Ivy Bridge CPUs weren't out. Summer of 2011, Sandy Bridge CPUs had only been on the market for a measly 5~ months.

    @Geekachu,

In YouTube, right click in the middle of the video, go to settings, and under the first tab (should look like a little display) make sure that "Enable Hardware Acceleration" is NOT enabled.

This has been the cause of some similar issues for me in the past.

I have a Dell XPS15Z and it sounds like your laptop is overheating. When mine gets too hot (over 85°C), some random program will start consuming enormous ammounts of processing power (70%+) and the temperature will start to go down. This happens until the temp is at a reasonable level and all the while the computer will barely work and any audio will staticy.
My advise is to get HWMonitor and check the procesor's temp when it happens. If it's overheating, you might wanna get a better cooling pad or replace the thermal paste.
    Hope that helps.
