A lot of people disagree with me, but I don't see the death of a pet as reason to call a day off.
    Grief is grief.
Work is work. Missing a day at work is not the end of the world for a company and if it is then it is probably not a place you wish to work out much longer.

I consider it acceptable to call out from work whenever you feel you need the time off, assuming you have the time accrued. Period.

If that is acceptable, then if any of my relative die I think I will ask for a month off.

PS. I am more a pro work person, I am also one of those that don't miss work unless I am half dead on the bed. I didn't even took time off when my relative died, let alone pet, but then I don't have pets so I hate them.
If you tried to bully me over that I'd report you to HR so fast it would make your head swim. No really, and if that didn't get anywhere I'd start going further up the food chain until something was done. You may not respect other people's emotions or their personal attachments but what gives you the right to push them around over it? I had a dog for 13 years man, he was my friend. I was devastated when my family lost him, and if some jackass tried to make fun of me over it they'd have discovered very quickly that I do not, under any circumstances, countenance a bully.

Yeah that is harassment. HR would love to hear about it...even if that person seldom missed work.
Get a grip man! It's CHEESE!
